Well driving home from nightshift last Tuesday morning, my faithful little runabout spat its cambelt.
So after being driven about for the remainder of the week, at the weekend I set to finding another car.
Using the internet (autotrader, ebay) and local papers didn't reveal anything I'd be happy spending thousands on, roadside cars in the hundreds didn't appeal. Except for one.
Very local, where my father had had work done on his previous Mondeo (2.0 Ghia estate), tbere had been sat for a couple of months, a black Ford Cougar. We had a look, scruffy but with the price lowered and me desparate for transport I decided to try it. Well he had a T Saxo/205 for £95 more so it was no contest. Handed over 400 notes, and having arranged with his mate to have cambeltless collected, drove the Cougar home.

Just to justify ownership of a Ford coupe, I list here some of my other rides;
1986: Ford Consul Classic 315 (1963)
1987: Cortina MK4 1.6
1988: Ford Orion 1.6i Ghia (factory fresh)
1994: Ford (US) Thunderbird 3.8L LX (1989)
2000: Ford (US) Thunderbird 3.8 SuperCoupe (1995)
Post 2000-2009, various non-Fords including a Mazda 626 7-seater and a Mazda 323 frameless 5-door coupe, and other necessarily 8-seat vehicles of which the best was an ancient Peugeot 505 family.
2009-present and my longest owned car, Daewoo Lanos 3-door. That was purchased as temporary! transport.

I had been looking to replace with one of;
CC-3 '08 plate or newer,
Puma
Cougar 2.5
Or...Thunderbird SuperCoupe (again)...but I believe the last '94-'95 example has left the UK.

So necessity sees me driving a Cougar 16v - rather than the recommended £500+ array of Focuses, Fiestas et al.

Some questions for those who are intimate with the range please;
Was there a remote keyfob standard, optional or limited to certain trim ?
Rear fog lamps, I really don't understand this as fitment was mandatory since 1980 - I had to add to my Thunderbirds as US cars don't require them, yet on the Cougar I can find neither the lamps nor a switch - should there be or have Ford slipped the Cougar through the net ?
Can I buy @scunnycougar's tailgate strut ?

Think that covers things for now, cheers Cougar owners.

Hello and welcome to the forum. (y)

An interesting array of cars to say the least.

All Cougars were originally supplied with two keys; a 'master' key with a red chip and a three button remote.
They are all equipped with REAR fog lamps ; they should operate by pulling the headlamp knob towards you once after it has been twisted to turn the side lamps on. The fog lamp bulb is a dual- filament along with the rear lamp in the outer 'boob'.
FRONT fogs were not fitted to the 2.0 but all the wiring is in place should you wish to do so. It requires a suitably equipped, double-pull headlamp switch, a relay and an uprated fuse.
Drop Scunny a PM re the strut he has for sale.

Welcome to the friendliest car forum on the planet, I think Andy has covered your queries

Pictures of your Cougar are compulsory

The club is a bit like Google, whatever your Cougar related question is somebody has the answer

Enjoy the car and if you keep it for a while come to some of the meets next year

Thank-you both.
Yes I waa put right about the rear fog-lamps by my mechanic work-colleague when I mentioned it whilst we were translating the radio serialnumber into the security code.
I already got the 12v accessory socket working to power my dash-cam, had to search online to find the fuse-box behind the glovebox, replace fuse27 and scrape the centre-pin shiny (big tip, take the fuse out whilst doing that).

The door-mirror control stick seems wire wrong - I can live with it but it operates the wrong side mirror when turned, and forwards is down/back is up. Lefr-right is OK.

Part-way towards appeasing me not getting the V6 would be to find out if cruise control could be retrofitted to the 16v (that's why the CC-3 had been on my shopping list but not a CC-2). It has to involve more than swapping steering wheels, right?

I'd also be interested in using OBD bluetooth adapter (which I already have if I can find it since it didn't work with the Daewoo socket-adapter), other than service codes can it supply any "live" data to read on an android tablet?

Since I didn't receive the remote with the car, is that it - or is it possible to obtain any other and pair it to the car?

The Thunderbird SuperCoupe and Mercury Cougar XR7 are almost twins...
The Ford Cougar production was between the demise of the 5-seat Thunderbird coupe and the introduction of the the 2-seater convertible retro-style Jag-platform Thinderbird.

Glad you found the fog lamps and the fuse box.

I'm wondering if the mirror adjustment switch has been swapped with one from a Mondeo?
The Cougar one should have the emblems around the bottom section of the switch collar not around the top.

CC can be fitted to a Zetec.
The wiring is in place but you'll need a module and brackets, actuating cable, pedal switches and a steering wheel with cruise buttons.

The OBD socket is at the bottom right-hand corner of the panel under the steering column.

:Edit: Welcome! We have experience of someone going from a tiny Daewoo to a Cougar - hope you enjoy it!

1994: Ford (US) Thunderbird 3.8L LX (1989)
2000: Ford (US) Thunderbird 3.8 SuperCoupe (1995).

Oh. Oh dear lord! I think I've just had an incident. [/Clarkson]

I've been looking for a '97 V8 for a while now, but it sounds like I'm on a hiding to nothing. The only T-Birds I've found for sale in this country have been late 50s, or the 2002- blobs. The only 10th-gen one - which is what I want - that I've ever actually seen over here will not be for sale...

Check the mirror stick is not back to front in the panel. A common mistake if its been removed at any time.

I reckon Al's got that one nailed. I've even seen one fitted sideways despite the fact that knob and the switchbody are keyed and this shouldn't be possible. Never underestimate brute force and massive ignorance.

Welcome mate. Nice list of previous rides there(y)

Chris I'm sure I had a Matchbox model of a 90s T-bird, changed colour under hot water if I remember rightly!

This does not help me, you tapdancing clownbasket!

I WANT.

I want a lazy-but-primitve V8 with a beautiful body again. I want a Coupe that is stupid-but-reliable, has a wonderful engine, and is absolutely gorgeous. The late 90s T-bird fits the bill.

The one pictured is a '96-'97 variant, these couod have the V6-3.8 or the V8-4.6, though not the Mustang/Lincoln HO 32-valve.
From '89-'90 only the V6 was fitted, injection or 210hp supercharged.
From '90-'93 also the V8-5.0 205hp was also available.
'94-'95 V8-4.6 introduced and supercharged V6 upped to 230hp.
supercharged V6 dropped '96 I believe due cost of programming or then mandated OBD interface and falling numbers, range due to be discontinued shortly.

Welcome aboard:)
It's possible to add remote fobs and program them to the car no probs, the info is in the handbook if you have it.

What's more difficult to do is to add keys. The remote locking and immobiliser systems are separate, the locking is controlled by the remote fob and the immobiliser by the transponder in the key.

Enjoy your cougar (y)

what you want is a Cougar with a Chevy smallblock engine and a t5 tranny and impreza running gear with bespoke driveshafts (y)

Thank you. No I only have one key and the car, no handbook or remote - though I wonder if I kept a remote from any previous Ford....

Do you have the "red" key?

Chris, don't confuse the guy, this is pats2, there is no red key only, a black remote fob and the plain key with the red cap which covers the ransponder.

To program a new key/transponder, you must have two original keys, clones do not work but it's easy enough to get a blank dummy cut for entry to the car.

That's the key I have.
I had been told the two keys supplied would have been a 'master' red key, and the one I have, maybe the Cougar didn't follow other models?

Cougar followed the system available at the time which was PATS2. PATS1 used the red MASTER key, which even now seems to confuse a lot of the key cutting shops and the garage programmers etc. There is quite a lot of detailed info regarding the security system in the Members subscriber sections.
