Hi everyone,

it's been a while since I last visited.. but having had our tax come through for our cougar, we noticed that it was 148.50 for 6 months!! (more than the 4.0 xjr x300 series jag we had!)

so.. after looking around on parkers (not the most reliable source) and then the .gov website and a vehicle check.. the vehicle dvla check shows it was first registered:

05/05/2000

dvla website on tax cost it should be £121 for 6 months?

DVLA :

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012524

so... not exactly sure what to do right now.. if it's right at £148.50.. I'd seriously think the cougar would be going... after all it's only a 2.0 mondeo underneath..

anyone else come across this?

Thanks in advance

rob

From Parkers via the DVLA:

For cars registered after March 1st, 2001, the DVLA car tax rate (Vehicle Excise Duty) is based on the car's CO[SUB]2[/SUB] emissions and the type of fuel it uses.

Before that it's flat-rate, (as far as I can tell).

It might be better if you PM your actual reg to someone you trust here. But on the surface of it? it looks like you're getting screwed for about 30-odd quid for no reason.

The vehicle details for W891 WMA are:

seem totally nuts in all honesty.. I think they've either moved the goal post's on years (but me myself with the 306 cabriolet would have been affected too which I haven't) so.. looks like they may have made a **** up or something... not sure just seems too rich for what it really is lol

You need to call the DVLA Taxing helpline or visit a local office if theres one near you. It looks as if the reg date of your car may have been confused. The tax should be £121 for 6 months.

Wait - date of first registration with DVLA is 05/05/2007? And date of first registration is 05/05/2000?

Either that's an import, or you're the victim of a major typo.

Thanks guys....

having just looked at the quickly expiring tax disc... that was £143 back in february so.. something's deffintately not right.. and Mako your right why was it first registered with the DVLA in 2007? having just checked mine that entire box "first registered with dvla" doesn't appear? hhmm.. think we need to make some phone call's ASAP.

Thanks guys

I'll let you know what happens too :)

:EDIT:

Skip that. Every source I have says that it's a new car in 2007, even though it was built in 2000.

You definitely need to get to the DVLA to sort this out, (and get a refund for your last tax period).

Mako -

having just had a look at the V5c - turns out the car was actually first registered in the channel islands and then brought to the uk mainland in 2007 and then registered with the dvla so for that reason, falls into the higher bracket of a much newer car, but unfortunately doesn't gain an 07 plate lol

Oh! The lightbulb goes on here.

Is there anything you can do about that?

Same as Jersey cars. Could have been a 1969 but if it was brought here this year it would be declared as a 2012 car and taxed as such. Bummer!!

Not Mako's car Tim lol but yeah, the OP's car is the one registered here in 2007 putting it on the higher tax band.

It does seem a little unfair, even though that isn't a vast amount of money over 6 months by most people's standards.

I think what makes it frustrating is that you're being paying more for it than other people with the identical motor, producing the same emissions and made in the same year.

Which would be especially annoying, since if it wasn't an import, a car built in 1969 would be classed as "Historic" and tax-exempt... :cautious:
