Since using this cougar to work every day at 30miles a day I ain't seen a fuel station for nine days what a difference compared to my last cougar
it says I'm getting 31mpg but I only put 40 quid in it 9 days ago and I'm just under the quater
realy pleased I don't know if it's the st200 air box but it's saving me a bomb

Nope not really although a small part of it is through those f####### average 40mpg cameras at the forth road bridge the car just seems to run a lot better than my old one

I do 40 miles a day commuting and (unless I go somewhere distant at the weekend) I only fill up once a fortnight.

I absolutely love this car for how efficient and frugal it can be at motorway cruising speeds. I love it even more for being balls-out fun when I'm not worried what the MPG readout is.

My first one was really good on fuel and at the time I don't think anyone here really believed what I claimed, and at the same time I just assumed they were all lead-footed oafs with less technique than a teenager in bed. Then I got the second one which just used a lot more. Fate has not been kind to me since - my 3.0 S-Type drinks more than most supercharged 4.2 owners claim to use. Doh!

In short, I think these mass-produced engines and their sensors are subject to some rather large tolerances which can add up to being great, awful and anything in between!

Think is psychological, i've been filling up of late with Shell fuel save as its cheaper than V-power, i've been getting great figures of almost 30mpg but this is because i've been driving economical to save money (like most people i'm skint) but I reckon as soon as I put a tank of V-power back in i'll be back to my old ways because I will relish the extra performance gain and use that extra power more thus use more fuel. I might point out I drive about 6 miles to work and back twice a day thanks to split shifts (total 24 miles) at speeds averaging 40mph most of the time

 I agree with ginga I use exectly same fuel + can tell when I put vpower in,+skint at mo so I'm on normal shell unleaded as well(y)

V power I've never used it does it make that much of a difference I always thought it was a marketing ploy

A very highly developed race engine, or engines which run high boost pressures can/do make use of higher octane ratings. Even then it's only a few percent different. Normal naturally aspirated road going engines consistently show minimal differences either way which can actually be measured in a controlled test. Differences perceived real-world are placebo effects - i.e. the vast majority of people subconsciously alter their driving style to achieve the result they're looking for.

I live in what used to be the land of the Aston Martin. The only station in the area that had monster octane fuel was the BP about 300 yards away from the factory. On a good day you'd see maybe 10 of them lined up waiting to fuel up with Optimax and blast over to Northampton and back.

They need that fuel. My type-3 Zetec E? Not so much.

The only thing I do is fill up with BP 97RON one tank in ten for the better detergents. Anything else is, in my opinion, a waste of money. EDIT: And probably confuses the poor computer.

I think thats what I said or meant  although SHELL do reckon you could fill up a ferrari F1 car with the petrol from a forecourt
