A Long Shot...

Greetings... :- )

Wasn't sure where to post this question...apologies if it's in the wrong place... :- /

The question, like the title of the post, is a long shot, I bought the car with no
history and I wondered if anyone on here had owned it at some point so I can
try to fill in some of the gaps, sounds unlikely I know but as there were limited
numbers of MK2's in the UK I thought it was worth a try...

History checks are pretty much useless...even the DVLA can only trace MOT
back to 2005...

Anyway...it's a Silver, MK2 V6, September 2001,
registration: MK51AWH...any information much
appreciated... :- )

Thanks for looking anyway...
I bought this in a bit of a hurry...getting it booked in this week, find out if I've bought a crapbox...

My car before this (well, still is 'till the end of the month when the MOT runs out) is a 1998
Cougar V6...I bought it with 107,000 miles on it, it's now at 171,000, lost a few horses on
the journey for sure, but it's been my daily drive for the last 6 years, only repairs in that
period (barring consumables) were a new battery, alternator and that wiring mod to stop
the headlights flickering...hence my grabbing this MK2 when I came up...probably not one
of my best decisions...I await the mechanic's judgement... ;- )

Hello and welcome. The C2's are a bit sparse but are supposedly a better drive (amongst other improvements) than the C1, I hope everything is OK with it and you enjoy it for many years to come.

The C2 was purely a cosmetic facelift. Any difference in ride quality, handling or performance between a C1 and C2 would be down to the condition of each particular car. Brand new examples of either, were they hypothetically available, would drive identically.

Absolutely...the only difference I can feel in the handling is that the ride is slightly less harsh
(something a few owners complained about) and I'm assuming this is down to a change in tyre
profile (55 instead of 50) but once they're worn out I'll be changing to 225/45 as I think the
steering is sharper and more precise...the "improved" seats do provide more lateral support
but there is a small trade off in comfort, the old seats are much softer...

I didn't get the standard CD...other than that this is spot on...good to know
this was the manufactured specification and it's all original...

Heh. And how long is it going to stay that way, I wonder... :p

EDIT: Incidentally, the 6006 CD changer wasn't standard as such. If I'm remembering correctly, it's the one where you can push 6 CDs into the slot of the head unit.

These were a pretty common option on 2000-era Focusses and Mondeos, but I don't know how common they were on the Cougar. Most of the standard Cougars I've seen have the 6000CD head unit with the optional 6-disc magazine in the boot connected via a very long and ugly cable.

Yes, I only worked that out when I looked at a PDF of the original spec' for the facelift,
in some ways I'd like to have the standard radio back just for the originality, but the
unit that replaced it does have some great features and does sound better...also nice
not to have all that gubbins in the boot...

I was going to add my old car up here if anyone was looking for spares but I haven't
posted enough to qualify yet - scrap prices vary between 80 and 160 - but I'd have
thought I'd make that back just on the interior, lights, etc...they make it difficult
in the UK to just park a car and not use it...maybe I should buy myself a field!!!

Stick around mate. Once you qualify to sell, (whatever the criteria here to sell is now) I have no doubt your old Coug will help keep others alive.

As for parking it up and not using it? Keeping it off the road and SORNing it is all you need to do. You don't even need to insure it; that's only necessary if it's got a valid tax disc.

Re: A long shot...

Greetings...been some time since I updated this Cougar story...unfortunately it was a dog...and what a dog...I'll list the faults from my mechanic's initial inspection:

Front and rear brake disks and pads require immediate replacement,
disks badly scored and pads nearly worn down to the metal.

Door hinge pins rusted causing doors to drop.

Dash light heater control switches not illuminated.

Fog light faulty.

NSF wing trim missing.

Front and rear wipers require replacement.

Passenger seat does not tip/slide forward.

O/S/F and N/S/F wheel bearings require replacement.

N/S/R shock absorber leaking.

Front anti-roll bar bushes have excessive play.

O/S/F link rod bushes perished.

Front crankshaft oil seal leaking.

Oil filter has slight leak.

N/S/F locking nut cracked.

O/S door mirror not operating left to right.

Rear washer inoperative.

PAS pump weeping.

I've had all this work done now, aside from the leaky shock and the passenger
seat cables...

Then, just as he finished doing the power steering pump, he found that the
steering cooler pipe was knackered and leaking too...fortunately UKCougar
user "everton2004" put me on to the "CatFabs" site and saved me around
350 squid on the (crappier) version from Ford...

My mechanic also told me that when he tried to remove the crank pulley,
it was seized in place and had to be heated to get it off...when he found
the leak on the cooler pipe and heard the silly quote from Ford he bypassed
the cooler (as a temporary measure) so I could still drive it okay while I made
up my mind what to do...

As soon as the replacement one from CatFabs arrives I'll get it fitted...and as
this part is made from marine-grade stainless steel, at least it'll be one part I'll
never have to worry about again!

Here's the link for the "gentleman" that sold me this saying it
"had no major problems" in my opinion, Mr Lyall Hazard is a
dealer to be more than just avoided, I truly believe he should
be avoided in the same way one would avoid an HIV positive,
syphilitic, Wolverine with an advanced case of Bubonic plague...

http://stour-valley-motor-company-ltd.ebaymp.co.uk/

...Of course...when I e-mailed mr hazard to point out these,
huge, MOT-failing faults, based on the assumption that he too
had been unaware about them and would be just as shocked
as I was...he didn't respond...

The bills so far amount to just over 1144 squid...but I guess
it balances out as it's only the second bad car I've ever bought,
(and I've bought and sold a lot of cars) but I'm not young or
fit enough these days to crawl around and take a proper look,
so some trust is involved...

The good news...?

My Mk2 Cougar lives! ("we few...we happy few...")

...now then...how the hell do I get at those seat cables...
