Nevertheless, if you decide to take a punt on the car, it seems sensible to try for a cheap fix first. Perhaps you could also knock him down a few quid, effectively getting him to fund the repair?
Yes, that's what it looks like. The hydraulics pressurise the fluid, and any excess pressure should be able to come out through that vent/breather. But because the vent is in some way faulty, the pressure (and the fluid) escapes the only way it can - through the dipstick tube.
Again, not an expert here; it might be that Paul has had other experiences of the 'box that have necessitated a rebuild.
seems to be a known problem usualy when battery been off they can trap the breather when its put back on car as for price the car was 900 and now its 200 think its worth a go even if i have to change box looks a good car 1 owner and 87000 miles mot till end of year and my favorite colour trying to arrange a trailor
