i had my car jet washed yesterday by the local polish as i was being lazy, bad idea as when i was driving to work one of my rear light covers decided to leave me and make a run for it :(

short cuts never pay off is the lesson i learnt

Last time i used a car wash was donkeys ago when i had a mk4 cortina. Ran it into the auto/drivethrough thing and came out the other end minus drivers side mirror and one windscreen wiper. o_O

I use the hand car wash places occasionally, don't seem to have any trouble. But never again with the automatics! Smashed the Cougars wing mirror off! It snaps back on, but was very wobbly afterwards. Had to stick it back on with some padded tape stuff to stop the wobble :/

I do like these hand car washes, I'm so lazy these days!
Time was when I'd spend virtually all weekend washing and polishing - a £15 mini valet is so much more appealing now

Just to play Devil's Advocate, there are plenty of vehicles that are probably jet washed daily and don't fall to bits.....

I see cars and light vans that are blasted everyday with no I'll effects?

The last time I jetwashed mine - with a Kärscher - water got into the door locking mechanism on the driver's side and that cost me £300 ish to put right.

Never had any problems using a jet wash, but then I've always done it myself. Never trust anyone else with what you consider to be the Crown Jewels. (y)

During my first ownership of a Cougar back in 1999 I found out the hard way that the wing mirrors are not suitable for drive through car washes . Unfortunately it was the morning of my wedding. I still remember driving down to Gatwick the following morning with the drivers mirror bound up with insulating tape to stop it dropping off. Don't go near them with the latest acquisition.

The trick with pressure washers is don't concentrate the jet in one area for too long it will peal paint and underseal in a bat of an eye, sorry if this is sounds a bit obvious...

I've got a little Karscher i use now and again if i'm feeling a bit lazy to loosen dirt then hand wash the car, only because its the size of an aircraft carrier and takes ages otherwise

I usually hand wash mine, as don't like using garage forecourt jet washers or automatic's. However, on occasion (just being completely lazy lol!!!) I have used the local Tesco jet wash and never had an issue at all. However like above ^^^^^^ never concentrated the jet washer for periods of time in any one place, always keep it moving.

If you have the time and energy, then I would always advise a hand wash (two bucket method).
