Has anybody fitted gas bonnet struts to their cougar and if so how hard was it to do. Been thinking of getting a set from a MK3 mondeo as can get them quite cheap, but want to know wether its possible and how it looks if it is.

I have fitted SGS gas struts and it is a doddle. There is a fitting guide somewhere. All you have to do is make sure you get the right brackets and fit them in the right place allowing the bonnet to close properly. I will see if I can find the write-up that I used. I think it is on the RedLine tuning web site somewhere.

I fitted mine about 2007 iirc, brilliant mod, no more knocking the stay when working under the bonnet, and they lift the bonnet more vertical. I put a "HOWTO" in the relevent section.

I got mine from redline tuning USA.

I have been in touch with Redline Tuning as regards to shipping etc.

In US dolldars it works out as the following
$69.95 for the kit and a further $37.21 for shipping so a total of $107.16

In our money its the following
£41.94 for the kit and a further £22.30 for shipping so a total of £64.24.

Does that sound like a reasonable price to pay for having it shipped from the USA? or does anybody know if i can get it from here in the UK?

When i got mine, USA was the only option. Maybe if you seach the net, you might get lucky in UK.

Checked on my Mum's Mk3 Mondy today and found the bonnet struts are between 9 and 10 ins. long when fully extended and are fitted between the inside of the top bonnet hinge bracket and a bracket welded onto the inside back corner of the suspension turret.

I ordered a nice set of shiney stainless ones off ebay, come with self tapping ball joints so small hole drilled into the vertical part of the wing and another into the bonnet using Al's how-to screwed them in and all done in 15 mins, have taken them off at the moment as I have a new bonnet to get around to fitting

Reviving this a little, would it be possible Paul if you could post a pic of how you fitted your Struts mate?? or can someone tell me where i could find the brackets for Mondeo ones where they fit in to the hinge of the bonnet as the cougar hinge is the other way round, if you know what i mean.?? or does anyone know where there is a kit for the cougar available that's a direct buy and fit rather than made up of bits and confusing conversations with SGS.. ?

Just read through that Al, the problem is the MK2 Mondeo ones only come with self tapping ball fixings, and not the brackets.. ? as the top ball screws in to the hinge fixing on the Mondeo, but the cougars hinge fixing is horizontal and not vertical, I will need to measure the ball diameter and see if SGS sell the brackets that fit the struts.. ?

The other question would be, how long are the redline struts ? are they the same length as the mondeo ones do you know Al.. ?

All i can find, but i remember the hinge bolts as seen in the photo, also i remember the wing bolt/ball joints were indeed self tappers. Sorry mate but i don't seem to have anything else showing them.

Yep, that's the ones, the bottom bolts should not be a problem, but the ones the fix in to the hinge i think i may have to buy a bracket as the cougar's hinge is the other way round and flat.. (y)
