Hi all. I've just learned that unfortunately I need new shocks/dampers for my V6 Cougar, and I was rather shocked when I was told the price. 4 dampers for... £780

So I wanted to ask:

1) Is this too much? Would it be cheaper to source them in some other way?
2) Is there a good aftermarket suspension kit available that includes dampers which would be more cost effective?

Cheers

Ali

The standard fit dampers from Ford are about £200 each, but i don't think they are available any more, not even as a factory order.

As far as i can tell from my own research their are no full spring/damper kits available any more,

But there are dampers available from Monroe (reflex) on ebay for about £110-130 a pair i haven't used these myself but there are other on here who have, and i'm sure they will be along to advise better than me on the ride etc.

Then its just a choice of ther springs dependant on what ride/drop your looking for, there are currently a few options spring wise, these are a few from my research i've managed to find :)

Apex, PI, Weitec, H&R, and i think Koni do some ?

Thanks everyone for your advice as always. I've found the Monroe's on Ebay for £250 for the lot which seems much more like it. Also on Eurocarparts I found these, they are made by Sachs, does anyone know if these are any good?...

But definitely on the recommendation of Bigcatdazzer I would go for the Monroe's. But for the springs I can only find the same Apex kit everywhere which lowers by 35mm, does anyone know if it's any good?...

I can vouch for the quality of the Monroe Reflex shocks.. i have them on mine.
Available from the Monroe website for approx £260 for all 4 in the Cougar specific fitting.

Thanks dogsbody, but how do you buy directly from the Monroe site? I can find the section that describes the Monroe Reflex shocks, but there's not indication of how to buy or a phone number.

I can only say from years ago i had Sachs shockers on a mk1 Golf years ago, seemed ok from what i can remember,

I've very recently ordered some Apex springs which are "STILL" yet to arrive and MotorsportWorld are worse than useless, every time i phone if i'm not on hold for 25 minutes that is, they can't give me an answer, and they were supposed to be here in 7-10 days that was on the 6th April..... Grrr :cautious:

Anyhoo, sorry rant over... Apex springs are alright ride wise, had them on a 306 with Bilstein B4's and the ride was good, not too hard or jarring, like Koni's,

Cheers for the links bigcatdazzer and to everyone once again for your help. I literally feel as if the weight of the world has been lifted. Anyway hopefully I will be able to get all of this within the next few weeks and the whole car will really be transformed. Now I just need to find an alternator that doesn't cost as much as an entire car o_O

p.s good luck with your springs Frosty, I'll let you know what they're like if mine arrive before yours :p
