You can get away with looping the pipes together for a very temporary fix, but if you intend driving any distances you need to replace the cooler, and if it's making noises you need to top up the fluid now..

keeping the fluid topped up, Once fluid is in, its silent. the machanic who told me this, said that the cooler is there for sprting purposes, like track days and racing...etc.
Thank you for your speedy response. MORE WELCOME!

The cooler is fitted for a good reason and it's not track based, i am sure Ford did not have track days in mind when they built the cougar.. :) but to be honest the cooler needs to be replaced, they are not cheap to buy from Ford's, There are a few options though, second hand one, or a stainless one that's made by a member on here, I am not sure if you have to be a forum subscriber or not but i can check and see for you. in order to buy the stainless one, I have a second hand one for sale in good condition too.

According to my Machanic, they've managed to repair it, they are pressure testing it now! if it fails, I'll go with the above options, as ford want £485 for a new one! Thanks guys!
