From this I infer that they don't get their VIN until the build is complete? Because as far as I know they were all produced at Flat Rock and finished in Germany.

I'm not sure myself, after finding the page linked to above earlier this naturally sends you on an unknown mysterious journey of the internet, suffice to say I did some reading!

Articles HERE & HERE indicate the VIN is applied pretty much as soon as the dealer hits the order button.

Thinking logically too, the VIN is in fairly inaccessible places, it would have to be done fairly early in the building of the car not towards the end.

I agree with that Steve because an original engine number will match the sequence number of the VIN. On the V6 the engine number is pretty inaccessible once fitted.
One of the places the engine number is stamped is covered by the gearbox bellhousing.

According to TIS:
the first 3 items in the Vin are the 'World Manufactuer Identifier' - WF0 relates to Ford Werke AG Germany.
the eleventh item in the VIN denotes the 'Assembly Plant' - a figure '5' in this position relates to AAI* Flat Rock Michigan
Mine has a '5' here.
All 'Ford' vehicles should have a six figure sequential no. no greater than 599,999.
'Mercury' vehicles start at 600,001.

*AAI is the 'AutoAlliance International' assembly plant Ford shared with Mazda.

Matt, I did mine using Steve's link and it returned the same info regarding the year(obviously wrong) and plant code as his did but below that there was another section named 'minor details' which mentioned 'Flat Rock'.

I'll have a look on the proper computer tomorrow the way this phones performing Im not sure it would cope!

Slightly OT, but what did you say to me about my overhead console, it should have seven lights not five?

I remember Flat Rock from my Probe Club days, we had a plan to go out there at one point.

The 10th figure(Model Year) in the VIN no. should be W for 1998, X for 1999, Y for 2000, 1 for 2001 and 2 for 2002.
