hi all,
my cougar 2.5 engine has died on me :( Upon inspecting the oil, there are metal shavings in it. So its' engine replacement time.
I have sourced another 2.5 engine from a 2001 model. My cougar is 2000 model. Are there any differences between the engines? Will the wiring etc be the same?

also , my car is manual. The replacement engine is from an automatic. Will there be any issues in changing to this engine??

Thanks a lot for your help :)

Ryan

Hello Ryan and welcome to the home of the Cougar. I should imagine the engines will be the same, but, I don't know about the wiring. May be a good idea to PM charliecd001 as he used to work in a garage that did almost everything you could think of to cougars.

Welcome from down under ! Can't be many cougars around your neck of the woods ?
As far as your question goes, sorry I got no clue and defer to those who know better (y)

Hello Ryan and welcome to ukcougar.org, your in the right place for all things cougar related, as well as some crazy banter. Remember! ukcougar.org is the only workshop manual for the big cat.

G'day mate, good to have you aboard. Hope you manage to get the engine swap done without too much hassle. I'm afraid I can't offer any advice either, other than what has already been said, drop Mark a PM. There are others on here who have done engine swaps, so someone should be able to help. Shame the FPV Boss engine won't fit from the Falcon lol!!! Now there's some grunt!! LOL!!!!

Basically the engines will be the same, obviously you'll need to recover the clutch/flywheel from the manual transmission engine and swap it with the torque converter on the automatic one.

Then just start swapping bits over, your existing ECU will not be expecting any automatic transmission parameters so that's a bonus.

Andy

Not much point swapping the EGR valve and pipework, if your old engine had one, onto the new one; better to leave the blanking plate in position.

Also I'd renew the clutch unless your certain you have plenty of life in your current one.

You won't want to be taking it all to bits again in a hurry!

Andy

Welcome you might want to also think about swapping the slave cylinder depending on when it was last changed seeing as your gonna split the gearbox anyway

As andy sais the difference is all by the gearbox, when you remove the gearbox there is a big donut shaped torque converter you need to remove and I also believe their is a drive shaft reducer type piece in behind the clutch been a while since I swapped a donkey in a slushbox (y)
