Had a black one, now got a blue one!

I bought a blue Cougar with only 58K on it recently from eBay for £1300 having owned a black Cougar for 10 years and I can tell you that the new blue one is absolutely immaculate and worth every penny IMHO (even though I think some forum members thought it was over priced). It was really interesting driving the 58K blue one immediately after the 140K black one - it feels like a completely different car - more responsive, quieter and much sharper handling. There are a few niggling problems I need to sort out - the drivers door glass just touches the trim when opening and closing (are there end point switches that need to be set?) and one rear speaker is blown. Plus it doesn't have a heated front screen which my black one did and I really miss it - I still have the black one as I haven't scrapped it yet so is swapping over the parts feasible?

In response to the other people's comments, I do drive like a granny as I regularly get over 35mpg!

(thanks Quicksliver for your response in the other section and for suggesting posting in the new members section)

Welcome Simon

if you're scrapping the black one then you've got nothing to lose by having a go at removing the screen.
Normally a fitter will sacrifice the screen to avoid damaging the vehicle body but if you want the glass out undamaged and don't care about the car it is possible with the right tools and a person to help.
I've done it successfuly to remove rear glass and quarters on a Rover Tomcat HERE

you'll need to be VERY careful not to chop through the screen loom with the removal wire.

Once out you'll need to get it all cleaned up, do the same all over again with the new car taking care not to damage the paintwork and interior plastics, and refit.

alternatively, make sure you have windscreen cover, accidentally on purpose crack the screen, pay the excess and call autoglass :)

rear speakers are a doddle to do you can either slot in a pair of replacement 5x7s or do what I did in my old car and fit 6x9s HERE

Nice car btw

Just to back up Steve's post, I know he used to be a glass fitter and it was him that pulled the rear screen and quarterlights from Minxy, (the silver Tomcat in the linked thread).

It's totally do-able, but having watched him do it, I know it's a pain in the ass.

Also, this business about damaging your windscreen and claiming that your original was heated? This is bad juju. Okay, Autoglass (or whoever) has no idea about the options fitted to your car. Their fitter won't care either - they've got no idea other than the car model and and order number as far as I can tell. You could even fool them by pre-fitting the switchbank that includes the front de-mister.

But if you get caught - like if they notice what they're removing isn't a heated screen and decide to report it? Insurance fraud. If you hold any sort of government clearance, you will lose it. So if you're planning on taking that risk, please think it through.

I agree with this, if this is the root anybody plans I would be upfront with them and tell them beforehand if you could 'upgrade' to a heated screen, they might do it FOC anyway or charge a small fee

You could even say it should have a heated screen and for some reason the previous owner only had a standard one fitted

Hello Simon and welcome to UKCc.
Your window glass is adjustable and can be set from within the door mechanism. I have a HOW-TO in that section.
Re the winscreen replacement:just tell them you want a heated screen and they will provide and fit a heated screen covered by your insurance. I've had two upgrades so far.

Thanks for all the helpful and welcoming comments chaps. TBH I will just rob the switch and relay from the black one and then if the screen get damaged at some point ask if I can upgrade the screen then ( I plan to own it "forever" so it's almost inevitable that it will need replacing at some point).
Are there "how tos" on removing the switch and getting the rear side panels off to? I always seem to break plastic bits whenever I try and do this sort of thing so I wonder if there are some tips?

Thx

Simon

Welcome Simon to the club, in answer to your question - for the small fee of £15 to become a member you can access a whole host of How Tos, in fact they just about cover everything you will ever need from modding to maintenance, and from tips to tools needed - it is well worth the money and better than any manual out there (y)

Hello and welcome aboard. Sounds like you have a very nice low miler, not many around with that type of mileage.

OK I guess I had better join the club as a member if there are how tos on everything I need. I sound a bit tight but I subscribe to loads of forums due to my car, motorbike and model aircraft hobbies and it would start to get abit expensive if they all cost £15..

Best £15 you could spend (y)

This site and the people here have kept me and my Cougar going for the past 5 years

I certainly take your point, but that £15 buys an awful lot of goodwill (as well as access to some exclusive stuff). In any case, thank you for joining - make yourself at home!
