I am tempted to buy some wheels from the US on top of shipping cost what else am i likely to be charged, does it work on weight or price or what ?

I think it's content and weight. As in car parts/clothes etc and how much the package weighs. Could be worth a chat to an American car parts place or similar if there's one near you. They're even offer to sly your wheels in to a shipment of theirs :)

Just found this calculator-
Import duty & tax rates

You classified Car parts as Car Tyres & Wheels -> Wheel of Steel. Based on this classification, the import duty rate for importing Car parts into AustraliaAustriaBelgiumBrazilBulgariaChileChinaCyprusCzech RepublicDenmarkEstoniaFinlandFranceGermanyGreeceHong KongHungaryIndiaIrelandItalyJapanLatviaLithuaniaLuxembourgMaltaNetherlandsNew ZealandNorwayPhilippinesPolandPortugalRomaniaRussian FederationSingaporeSlovakiaSloveniaSouth AfricaSpainSwedenSwitzerlandTurkeyUnited Arab EmiratesUnited KingdomUnited States is 3%. The import VAT rate for Car parts is 20%.

Calculation example

The actual import duty & taxes due are determined by the value of the product and the cost of importing. Here is an example calculation for import duty & taxes for importing Car parts into United Kingdom from United States:
Product value:£831.77
Shipping costs:£111.90
Insurance costs:£35.38
Total import value:£979.05
Import duty @ 3%:£29.37
Import VAT @ 20%:£201.68
Total import duty & VAT:£231.06

Not that I've had the need to import anything for an age, but I thought it was only done on the declared value, & didn't take post into consideration? Obviously not going by that calc...

So would the same calculations and the 25 - 30 % estimate be for anything imported or just car parts ? And would it make a difference from what country you were importing from ?

The Z3 wings that I bought ended up costing me £550.00 including shipping, import duty, VAT and handling, and they are up in the loft doing nothing. If I'd been in america I would've paid $105.00 for them.

If you click on the link you can put in different countries and change the items,i believe it can be different rates of tax depending on what you buy and where you buy it from.

What really annoys me is that you have to pay tax and vat on the shipping ,rip off britain strikes again
