Just got a cougar but using it as an additional motor not my everyday car, so not getting rid of existing cars. Insurance wise the companies say the no claims bonus on one car cannot transfered & the new car has to start with zero no claims. I got round this by using Admiral multicar, which seemed to be the easiest way.

I just thought I'd ask how other members dealt with this problem.

They have you by the short and curlies with this now as you have to insure the car or sorn it, that is if I understand the new rules.

I have been thinking of getting another car but would, if possible like to keep my Cougar, in the event of that happening, the cost of insurance would likely make the idea a non starter. Since I have spent so much on mine over the years, it'd be a pity to sell it for peanuts.

What cars do you have and how much (if you don't mind saying) did they charge for the cougar?

hi yeah they got you alright! With admiral multicar the more cars you put on the cheaper it is for each car (if you get me). Ive got a citroen c4 1.6 diesel which iv had from new & clocked up 62k going the 40 miles a day to & from work everyday, plus ferrying abt andholidays etc. So i didnt want the cougar for an everyday car. Ive got 9 yrs no claims and ended up with the c4 for £220 & the cat for £362.

If you go on compare the market sites you could get the basic insurance cheaper but then you got add ons for legal protection, no claims protection etc. In the end it was doing my head in so this wa the easiest way i could think of of sorting it out. As I wasnt selling the c4 i couldnt use the no claims on the cougar, but with multicar they take it into account for all the cars you got.

You could go for something bog standard, see what the quotes & then make a decision. When you drive a average car the cat is all the sweeter!! Like you say it would be a pity to have to part with it.

Joanne and I have an Admiral Multicar policy for the Cougar and our Fiesta. I'm the lead name on the Cougar with Joanne as a named driver and guaranteed NCD, Joanne is the lead name on the Fiesta with me as a named driver. We're both 32, I've been driving 14 years and hold 10 years' NCD, Joanne has been driving 4 years and holds 3 years' NCD. Admiral charge us just over £700 for the lot, fully comp. There were companies out there offering me cheaper quotes, but they wanted extortionate amounts to put Joanne on the Cougar - Direct Line point blank refused to even quote her, on account of the Cougar having have an induction kit!

When I first moved to having a second ( fun ) car on top of my normal car, I had it (MG) on a classic, since then I moved to a second policy (for Jag, Jeep etc) with Avivva who mirrored my full NCB. ( ie gave me 5 full 5 yrs on a new second policy)- had the 2nd policy for over 5 yts now, so got 2 separate full No claims history

Kat is costing me £199 to insure

This is the first year we've had a multicar policy. We're with Aviva for it though - for us Admiral was very expensive.

Ended up at a total of £550 for the cougar and the Galaxy.

Aviva seem very good but keep evidence of your old renewals etc as they only count 5 years ncb so you can go there with 20 years ncb and you'll leave with 5! If you keep your old renewals though you can use these later as evidence. All a pain in the backside but I've noticed most companies are starting with this approach - I guess in the hope you don't realise and lose out later. Although if they all end up following this trend then it won't matter as nobody will recognise more than 5 years anyway!

I pay more than that just for the cougar.:cry::cry:

I know people who payed double that for the Cougar (not me though) Admiral wouldn't touch me as the car was modified, and most of the companies on comparison sites don't want to know either. But saying that I got some good quotes on standard exotica off these sites so at least I know I can get some insurance if I ever decide to upgrade (most times its my points that cause problems)

Prrobably Rich, some of the quotes on the price comparison web-sites make me laugh though, £10k for insurance was one quote I had and lowest about £850, think my insurance was £650 last year fully comp, all mods and my driving history

None will touch mine either, and that is somebody who has a currently clean licence, 19 years NCD after 20 years driving, aged 44. It's the word 'Modified' that scares them off, if it's just a couple of things, then they are fine, any more and they don't want to know.

I think I remember one year and I went to just re-new as you do and the company that had insured me the year before with the broker wasn't interested for the next year, change of policy or something like that. I could just buy a car with the bits of kit i've fitted over the years fitted as standard but i'd have to pay probably twice or three times the money I paid to buy the Cougar in the first place! (£7500) might keep the insurance companys happy but not my bank manager ;)
