Just a basic ask, even though my cougar is a C1 V6 2.5, on acceleration I was told that you should feel it when the IMRC kicks in.
I have never felt anything other than smooth acceleration, I have looked to see if the IMRC works, But it was cold at the time, it looked to be moving, at the back anyway.
Its the slower auto and it goes well in sports mode, but no extra ooogh around 3000rpm.
Is it as it should be, as its my first Cougar, so I don't know any better.

P.S. Never had better than 28mpg on a long run, even though it not a major problem.

Thanks.

Regarding the IMRC you can feel it when it kicks in, but its more like 3750 RPM on mine, check it my revving by hand and you'll see the linkage move under the Throttle body, although with the engine at rest it'll be nearer 5000 RPM

they usually don't work when they get hot, so a good idea is to move the unit, mine is hanging down off the battery tray so it get's plenty of cold air.

you can wire an LED across the motor terminals and into the car to give you visual confirmation of when it operates.

lastly, check the end of the actuation rod is connected to the butterflies, the white clips are prone to breaking.

HTH

I had a look at the IMRC after a run, engine hot and it only just moves the spring, will have a look at it when its cooled down.
Maybe an idea to move it than.

never had an issue with my IMRC overheating on any of my 3 cougars, from what you describe yours is working otherwise you would lose top end power and not get a smooth acceleration, if you push it upto 3,000rpm and then slam your foot to the floor, if your secondaries don't open then the pickup is like driving a diseasal without a turbo (y)

Or a Zetec.

Never heard of one partly failing - they seem to either work fully or they don't at all, (and they usually fail after some minutes of driving, once the engine gets hot and bakes the transistor).

That is unless something is fouling the mechanism, or your IMRC has broken teeth in it?

As for your MPG, go for the usual stuff; filters, oil, and check your brakes aren't binding. Unless your runs are all done at 85MPH, you should be seeing far more MPG than that.

This is interesting to know, even after gentle, long motorway runs mine refuses to break the 25mpg barrier according to the computer.

Andy

I got 33MPG from Milton Keynes to Telford(ish) and back in my V6. I get 35-36MPG from my Zetec on similar runs.

I believe Dave (localloon) once got 36MPG from his V6 while 4-up.

Hunting MPG in the V6 is completely mental, but you should be getting better than 25. Either it's your driving style (no offence intended), the car's in need of a good service, or it's something more fundamental like a faulty lambda causing it to overfuel.

I once achieved 38mpg, with a fully loaded car complete with large tent and all camping equipment for a full 7 day holiday :)

Up a small hill home sports mode on, foot to the floor and got overtaken be a diesel van.

A night run about 100 miles cruise set at 60, mostly M25, £40 in fuel.
IMRC looks like a slack cable, will look into to the weekend.

You're not far from me Mako, I'm in Flitwick.

I'm going down now to see if I can work out what is wrong with the car, it's been routinely serviced BUT I think something else may have gone awry.

I'm going to test the HEGO now, although judging but it's recent emissions test I think all is well there, but nothing a good fiddling with can't prove!

Regards,
Andy

Not so far away at all - one junction up the M1.

Good luck and keep in touch, Andy. If you need any help, just shout.
