Can someone put me out of my misery o_O sorry it's not Cougar related but my lads 2005 Focus Zetec 1.6 with a Ti-Vct engine has two cats and a the CEL light came on showing P0036/P0136 codes. I know i need a bank 1 sensor 2 lambda, sensor 2 is post cat but cannot work out if we need the left or right hand sensor as not sure which or what bank one means. Thanks in advance for any help or please delete if inappropriate for general info.

Bank 1 usually refers to the front of the engine and bank 2 the rear. Not sure that helps on a 1.6 though :(

On an inline engine there's only "Bank 1". OBDII is written as a generic coding structure for lots of engine layouts. On inlines they only use the Bank 1 codes :)

There won't be a left/right sensor. Only one before the catalyst and one after. Usually the downstream sensor is a non-linear type and "post cat" usually means after pre-cat rather than after main cat. They're often heated full time too, unlike the upstream sensor which is only heated for a short period after start-up and relies on exhaust temp thereafter. The reason for that waffle is that the downstream ones often have to be the "genuine article" from the OEM rather than universal sensors which are linear zirconian type with a fancy plug fitted.

Cheers Jamie, there are actually two pre sensors and two post sensors on the 1.6 Ti-VTC 115 bhp engine as it has twin cats. Ford made two 1.6 engines and the other one which is i think is 99 bhp as you say only has one cat so only one pre and one post cat sensor Think i have sussed out that bank 1 side is the cat that cylinder 1 exits out of so hope i am changing the correct lambda .
As it happens right and left hand sensors are identical apart from one has a slightly longer cable so have ordered that one.
Ford service counter man said it was better to change all four at £169 each  so he quoted £ 676 plus around £150 to fit..yea right :) then he went on to say they are NGK/NTK branded sensors fitted to the engines. Got one online for £70, bit of a difference.

How strange... in that case then you're almost certainly correct. On a V engine as the coding was intended intended for, Bank 1 had Cylinder 1 on it. So if Ford in their wisdom have gone for a parallel pair of 2 branch exhaust manifolds then "Bank 1" as the ECU thinks of it will be cylinders 1 and 2. :)
