In this thread, danmo celebrated his Cougar happily doing 100,000 miles. I'd like to know how many miles your Cougar has done, so here's a poll.

If you'd like to talk about what issues it's had, (or hasn't had), feel free to post a brief summary in this thread.

Thank you!

Zetec just over 100k then clutch went, only major issue in 4 years, have done 40k in it since I bought it, trusted to take it to Amsterdam via Antwerp.
V6 144k then clutch went.

97,100(ish) here, from 77,700 when we bought it in July 2009. In that time, it's only needed normal wear and tear consumables:

  • Front and rear drop links
  • Wishbones
  • Spark plugs
  • Front track rod ends
  • Handbrake cables
  • 4 tyres (bought secondhand from Mofo, wrapped around Outlaw Magnum alloys as the orginal C1 alloys had become porous and were losing 10psi per day!)
  • Front and rear discs and pads
  • Fuel tank straps

It gave me a bit of a worry the other week when it developed a hiccuping problem, but it turned out to be nothing more than a loose vaccum hose on the induction kit.

By contrast, our little Fiesta TDCi is on 106,000+ miles, from 22,200 when we bought it in February 2008! That really has been a cracking little workhorse though, and has needed relatively few parts for the mileage it's covered.

  • 4 x injector seals
  • Inlet manifold (only because the original was broken by the ham fisted idiot that supposedly did the injector seals)
  • Several tyres!
  • Front discs and pads
  • Exhaust back box
  • 4 x injector seals again (done by Ian aka Lottysvdub, as the original ham fisted muppet cocked it up the first time round)
  • Shocks and springs all round (failed last MOT on one rear shock, but we picked up a full set of original ST shocks/springs for £50 on eBay)
  • Fuel pipes
  • Injector leak-off pipes
  • Clutch

All the fuel and injector related stuff was us going round and round trying to chase a fuel leak. Other than that niggle, it's been a bulletproof little car that does gazillions to the gallon.

Just recently (on the way back from the Castle Combe show) topped the 80'000 mile mark in mine, thats 57k in my hands since 2004.

Has had a set of wishbones, various drop-links and tyres and the usual stuff. Bit of a re-wire under the dash as some cables chaffed on a metal arm and burnt through but otherwise no majour problems....touch wood (has a dodgy battery at the moment, keeps doing the dial sweep now and again)

posted on my phone

cat4 has a speedo indicated mileage of 126,000 but the engine has done 50k less.

1) Zetec -engine change at 112,000
2) Wishbones
shocks
drop links all done at 118,000

3) Clutch done at 112,000

120,000 miles on mine (v6 mtx)
Alternator at 97,000
wishbones at 110,000
steering rack at 117,000
gearbox has had rattly lay shaft from around 110,000
Needs another alternator now.
Plus all the usual drop links, bushes etc

Still on orig engine which has never missed a beat.. Orig clutch too afaik.

150,500 miles on my v6
hells wishbones at 142,000
Idle Valve 135,000
Rear Shocks - 135000 - needs springs really
Plus all the usual drop links, bushes etc

Original Engine and Clutch

122,000 and counting
Taken off the road at 94,000 for fourby upgrade
had new clutch at the same time
never had wishbones
serviced every 6,000 miles since i've had her

my two cougars
silver v reg 50300
silver y reg 72000
only serviced the one with 50300 on it since getting it and changed tyres but the y reg seems to have a list never ending and i aint even driven her legal yet

seems that differing parts on different cougars pack up over a range of years and mileage. Would this be to do with how and where they are driven? I noticed that a survey on failures on first MOTs showed that cars in Milton Keynes failed on steering probs caused by all the roundabouts that are there!!
Have you had a chance to have a look at the results Mako?

Done rear brakes an sub frame , twin exit exhaust , vac lines cluster when first had the car at 98 thou then engine an box (st200) at about 108 thou and front bones about 118 thou now have rust in the seals ! so out with the welder !

That doesn't surprise me - according to Ms. Mako (whose been here for over 30 years) Cortinas in MK used to throw void bushes every 6,000 miles and Mk1 Mondeos around here were constantly failing on nearside brake runout and lower wishbones.

I haven't compiled a list yet and I'm not sure there's enough replies to this thread to get meaningful statistics, but I will try.

just added my mileage to the poll

92 something miles

haven't had her long but looking through what history there is and underneath the car it doesn't look like anything major has been changed - yet.......

given her a new battery and tank strap is about to be changed, can't say much more sorry!
