cougar just failed MOT on wisbone bushes and rusty rear subframe ! i have read through lots of posts and would like to clarify things if possible, is the rear subframe the same as a mondeo mk2 and are the wishbones mondeo st200's ? if not what are they and where is the best ( cheapest ) place to get them ?

Re the rusty subframe, if its only surface rust, get a wire brush drill attachment on it then give it a coat of paint.

Unsure on the wishbones sorry.

thanks, i have found a link to an american ebay ad which seems very cheap, just sent an enquiry so waiting to hear back from them

thats kind of what i thought but they have pointed out that it has already been welded. i have also seen on here that someone's subframe had been welded because a garage had tried to jack it up wrongly ! not sure whether that is why mine might have been welded

i got mine from the states and had one hell of a job :devilish::devilish::devilish: (even with lots of expert help) fitting them - unless you are getting someone to actually bring them over for you then for the sake of 30 - 40 quid i would go with the OEM ones - you will need a bolt kit as well

Mate, sorry to hear your Coug failed it's MOT. Not sure on the subframe but think it is the same subframe as the Mk2 Mondeo, but for the wishbones you could try Ford Parts UK, as we get discount with them - see the following links:

http://www.fordpartsuk.com/shop/c/cougar_suspension_271/

They are selling the wishbones at £112.51 excluding VAT (£134.40 inc vat)

Both links point to our Member discount sections. Subscription to the forum is required for access to these areas.

They were the two bits that I was dreading for mine, so I feel for you!

Wishbones as above - and shouldn't be too hard to do - think there is a guide on here. Subframe is a bit of a bummer though. I gave mine a good going over with the flap disc then painted it with some chassis paint a few weeks before the MOT. It looked terrible before hand but now looks great and I know the metal is solid.

If yours has started to give though it is time to replace. There has been a couple of 2nd hand subframes on ebay recently

buy 2nd hand then shot blast and powder coat before fitting it. and get all new rear arms and eccentric nuts that way you know you wont be going back there next year

The welding is probably more likely to be due to a broken ARB mount. That's most common. If changing the frame, maybe invest in the uprated mounts available on here, get them welded on and then strip and paint the whole frame to prolong it's life.

Quite agree, Stifler - if you've got to do, you might as well do it once! My donor subframe is sat waiting for bushes, eccentric bolts and uprated arb brackets - I shot blasted it, then welded any slight holes, so only needs paint after bits have been fitted..worth doing in the long run.

I'm sure there's been some discussion on here before, advising against powder coating subframes. I think the basic theory is that powder coat forms a one piece 'jacket' for whatever it's applied to. If a stone pings up off the road, strikes the subframe and punctures the powder coat, you then have a point of entry for moisture which will then sit inside the powder coat and alongside the subframe, accelerating the corrosion process. By all means have the replacement subframe shot blasted, but you'd be better either painting it with Hammerite or what I did was apply a good few coats of Waxoyl.

I never like powder coating for the above reason, it tends to trap water and the metal rust away behind.

Personally I wouldn't use hammerite as it isn't that good - find yourself a trade paint shop and ask them for something, I got some Lechler Technogrip from a local trade paint place and it is excellent stuff much better than Hammerite and probably works out cheaper - Think it was about £7 /litre - smells like pear drops and makes you feel funny if you paint in enclosed places. Paints on smoother than Hammerite and doesn't give that nasty gloss finish - it's more of a satin finish. I've heard that it has been used as OEM spec chassis paint, and places like towsure use it to paint their towbars with.
