So is it just mine ?
I've had my Cougar for 5 years or so. The wiper mechanism ( not the blades ) has always been really noisy.
Today, bored I decided to fix it.
Took the mechanism out, easy enough, oiled the minor joints, pulled the 2 main shafts apart, greased them, put 'em back. Whipped the cover off the motor gear box, pulled the nylon wheel out, re greased. Put it all back together. Refitted it to the car and......
No improvement whatsoever. Well that wasted 2 hours and I was bored, but now I'm dissatisfied too.
Google drew a blank as did the search box on our fave forum.
Solutions anybody ?

thats weird ,what sort of noise is it? squeaking ,clonking....i think it might be just yours:LOL:

intrigued though...maybe its just the motor itself worn out...a mondeo motor should fit if this is the case.

General whirring noise. No clunks or bumps.
It's always done it in the time I've had her. The noise seems to be amplified by the bulkhead, maybe I should try it not fixed to the car but it would be easy to lose a finger trying to hold the beast whilst it's all cranking away !
I've refitted everything so I probably won't do anything more anytime soon but still curious to if it's just mine.

Got to be honest, mine is absolutely silent apart from when the blades change direction on the screen.

Since you've lubricated everything, I can only suggest that the nylon cog is worn out.

ah now if its wirring it can only be the motor ,have you checked the rubber insulator mounts...if the rubber has gone id imagine you've got metal on metal contact with the mount..this will amplify the motor noise through the bulkhead.

personally id nip down the breakers and get a wiper motor complete with the mount and insulators off a mondeo.

the motor does naturally vibrate when in use and this vibration should be soaked up by some rubber insulators but if they've gone that is whats causing the noise...or it could just be a very worn nylon gear as chris has suggested..ether way it needs replacing.

It's been a long while since i dismantled one, maybe a mk2 capri but iirc the wiper mechanism is based on bushings rather than bearings and insulators at the bases. If any of these are worn you're going to get grumbling echoing through the bulkhead.

Out of further interest and because I like taking things apart, especially when they'e not supposed to be. I investigated further a day or 2 ago. Pulled it all out again, disconnected the main drive to the rack so just the motor and it's gearbox spinning. Switched it on and same noise, proves it's got to be the motor. Stripped the gearbox again, pulled the cover off the motor, pulled the motor out of the gearbox, small sealed bearing found on the gearbox end of the shaft, little bit of play in it and certainly feels dry. Gotta be the cause. Doesn't want to come off easily. In a fit of optimism I greased it up, reassembled the lot, refitted to the car and as expected, no improvement whatsoever. So as a couple of you have advised it's time for a replacement. I could scrap yard for a replacement but I'd rather give cash to someone on here. So if anyone has got a windscreen wiper motor mechanism available then let me know. Just the motor and gearbox will do to make it easier to post. Only a few bolts to separate the motor and box from the rack.
Yours optomistically, Mabo.

I regret that I don't have one for you.

Oddly, it seems to be the one thing that we all forget when stripping them.

Sound promising. Thank you Procomm. Can you confirm where exactly, or maybe just roughly where " rotting in a sarcophagus of general loathing in a ditch of redness" is?, presuming it's reasonably close to your parents garage.
Alternatively PM me and we'll see what we can sort out.

PMSL!

It's a lovely and neat house in a nice neighbourhood. Paul and his wonderful missus are some of the most interesting and kind people you're ever likely to meet, if you haven't already.

He's going to be so annoyed at me blowing his cover. :)

Well thanks to Mr Procomm I now have quiet windscreen wipers. He extracted a spare rack from stock and made collecting it very easy. Some how he managed to slide a cougar back bumper moulding into the car whilst my back was turned and then extracted a remarkably small amount of cash for my allowing him to leave it there. Rack fitted and the volume level is much reduced. I've even splashed out on some of Tescos flat blade wipers to replace the Ebay ones that work fine but the steel springs have corroded in a most unattractive way. I'll probably save fitting the rear end until next winter, I'm looking forward to getting her out of the winter R+R and getting her back on the road
Anyway it was a pleasure to meet you Mr Procomm and thanks for the cuppa.
