Good evening all.

Going to look at a V6 Cougar tomorrow - no preconceptions, it's just after my Mondeo Ghia's recent demise I need something comfortable and good at long distances for not much money, and this one is close by and has tax and mot!
I've previously owned both 2 and 2.5 litre Probes and it would be nice to get back into a coupe. I would class myself as a Ford man having also had sporty Escorts in the days when when they didnt command classic car prices

Looking forward to exploring the forum, I'll keep you informed.

Matt.

Go for it matt , I myself am taking the plunge , banged a deposit down last week on a clean as v6 with xpack(leather seats) £400!? I mean mate , what a bargain car , and after driving a Passat that killed my passion in driving I can't wait for the v6 growl come next week when I pick up , just mine , or should I say the one I'm getting has no tax and mot , booked in for Monday...
Wish me luck mate!
And all the best with your decision/purchase.

good luck to you mate - oddly enough I sold my XR3i for a diesel Passat and much the same thing happened. It was competent and cheap to run, but so is an A-rated washing machine:sleep:

if its a good one you will never look back great cars, there's just something special about them gets under your skin. And in your pocket in my case :)

Thank you!
Anything in particular I should be looking out for - if you've got a thread on this already I'd gladly be pointed in the right direction.

Rusty sills and rear sub frames are becoming common, sticky rear calipers or handbrake cables, dimming dash lights and headlamps aren't a major problem as there is a simple fix, alty light at 4-5000 rpm isn't good news as replacing an alty is a PITA, front wishbones are a Ford only part and expensive at £250 ish a pair.
Everything is covered somewhere on here but you need to subscribe to get the full monte.

Thanks very much -I'll bear that in mind.
I'd not long done the rear brakes on my Mondeo before it went bang and have scars to show(n)
To be honest I think there's a fair chance I will have it so hopefully subscription will follow - it would be nice to be involved witha car forum again.

As above really, wishbones and rear subframe are the real ones to take a look at. These 2 items will set you back money to sort out. Just get under it and have a poke around before buying. Let your head rule your heart. Good luck.

Hi Matt and welcome to ukcougar.org, your in the right place for all things cougar related, as well as some crazy banter. You will also be able to find all the fixes you need in our subscriber sections. Have a browse around the open forums and get a feel for the place. Remember! ukcougar.org is the only workshop manual for the big cat.

Rust

I have had a patch on an inner sill, some of the best cars in this club have had some form of metal stitching.

Check both sills thoroughly, rap all the way along the bottoms of them with your knuckles and listen for tell-tale signs of metal flakes bouncing around inside.

The lower extremities of the leading edge of the rear arches suffer too

Moving under the car look at the brake lines, especially at the back where they wrap under the chassis rails and on to the calipers.

Next check out the tank straps, rear subframe and filler pipe as these are all pretty exposed, and are hard to find items outside of this owners club ;)

Good luck!

Steve

Thanks guys.
Well I bought it!
Underneath and arches good, just a badly painted scrape on bumper to sort otherwise body is really good. Even the drivers seat isn't really worn, and there is a recent bill for new handbrake cables.
Five months MOT and tax left and I managed to screw him down to £550 - he apparently got it as a Ford dealer part-ex so I can't imagine how little they gave the owner for it!

Well got it home now, nice smooth and powerful, although I must admit I don't have the temptation to drive like a bat out of hell any more I'd rather cruise along knowing you've got it in reserve!
car has black leather, electric drivers seat, sunroof, heated front screen all of which work, it warms up very quickly and aircon also fully working. Oh and a very rubbish Ripspeed CD player which apparently also plays DVDs, although what you'd watch on a screen that size I've no idea!
From what I can see of the MOT history it's never had any advisories and only ever failed on bulbs or a blocked washer jet.
Some badly touched in scrapes on rear bumper corner to sort but seems positive so far otherwise(y)
