Right, got a few days off so decided to finally try and sort my sons car out-
For those of you that dont know he has a 54 plate focus 1.6 petrol engine that he blew up a couple of months ago. So it needs an engine swap --then he locked his keys in the boot--so it has been sat outside my house ever since. Today after getting quotes off a locksmith for £85 for a 2min job to retrieve the keys I decided to put the window through, but first i travelled 25 miles eachway to get the only 3 door focus glass in the manchester area.I was really pissed off when i got home and found out it was off a 5 door and would not fit.
So i then decided to drill the boot lock which was very easy to do, and kicked myself for not doing that in the first place, new boot lock ordered and back to the original problem:-
Are there different types of zetec engines and do i have to put in like for like ?
I have never done an engine swap on a 4 pot so i am going in completely blind on this one, Mark said he would help if needed but first i need to source an engine
Tomorrow i will take pics if someone could point me in the right direction i would be grateful(y)

I'm not clued up on the focus Mike, but i'm guessing the 54 plate would be a duratec although the boot badge might say zetec. A photo would be a big help. If in any doubt, just go for the same year/ engine spec.

Cheers Al,pics will be tomorrow- but people talk about silver top and black top and i know bugger all about focus or zetecs

The 1.6 is not a Zetec as such, it's badged a Zetec-SE but was developed with Yamaha (Sigma engine if I remember correctly). I'm sure you could drop a blacktop Zetec in if you wished but wouldn't have a clue what would be involved in the conversion!

The 1.6 is a Sigma unit (which is about 0.2% Yamaha - the involvement isn't anywhere near as great as some think, it's based on an idea for the construction of a Yamaha outboard,) you could swap to a conventional Zetec for obscure reasons (the Focus came with them from the factory) and either engine can be mounted to IB5 or MYX75 without much stress, I'm sure just switching to 1.8/2.0 mounts and possibly shafts would let you drop in one of the bigger "Zetec" units.

1.6s Sigmas I am fairly certain are simply that, can't recall any massive differences between them. Puma 1.7s probably drop in too if you want to give it a smidge more poke!!

i seem to remember reading somewhere a while back, Ford quite while back use to put Zetec on car with the Zetec engine's in, however sometime in early 2000's ish the Zetec become a way of describing a version of a model, other versions of that model could have a Zetec engine in but not necessarily called Zetec (just to confuse)

EDIT:-just found this for anyone's interest

Ford Motor Company used the Zetec name on a variety of Inline-4-cylinder automobile engines. It was coined to replace "Zeta" on a range of 1.6 L to 2.0 L multi-valve engines introduced in 1991 because Ford was threatened to be sued by Lancia who was the owner of the trademark.
