Blimey, that's shiny. Top work mate! I've been looking around at exhausts - when the money and time is right I'm poised to pounce on one eventually
this lot cost me about £40.
i made the link pipes myself.
not that loud just a bit more deeper.
one thing I'm unsure about is all those flanges and brackets that hang down by hanger mounts,
they don't seem to do anything or what there purpose is.

Top job. I suspect you may have several offers of business coming your way in the not-too-distant future!
I might be going off on a tangent, but the Cougar has 95% commonality underneath with the Mondeo (of all variants of that era). But it also has commonality with the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique.
My probably-not-entirely-accurate guess is that they all had different exhausts, but Ford made subframes and bodies that were the same for all of them, regardless of make, model or location for cost reasons. So you've found mounts that make no sense on a Cougar and possibly tried to fit to them.
Standard Cougar exhausts seem to last for the life of the car - seriously - but anyone fitting something aftermarket has invariably gone, "Why is there a mount there that a bung can't reach?"
The answer seems to be, "It doesn't have to. The exhaust is properly supported without it."
