Hi,
So I had this issue where it was very hard to fill the gas tank, because fuel pump (pistol) was shutting off every 5-10seconds. Also at the +- same time I started to have problems with gas gauge readings. Gauge was going up and down after warm up. Sometimes it was working good for 20mins, sometimes it was goind down after 5 mins. I had no idea that those issues vere connected. (no where on the internet those simptoms were connected, and i searched A LOT). So it appeared that my charcoal filter was clogged (that box beneath spare tire). I disconnected the filter, and both problems dissapeared. It was clear that this would solve the filling issue, but I was surprised that the pressure in the tank was affecting that floating thingy in the gas tank so much... Apparently the charcoal filter in cougars is sealed, so ill try to find one in the scrapyard. Or just live without it till MOT, because its there only for emmissions.
So if You have hard time filling and not accurate fuel gauge - you have the solution

Thanks - that's very interesting. For what it's worth I don't have a problem with the fuel guage and it's only certain pumps I have a problem with, so I assumed it was them and not the car.

But it's still interesting and might mean that mine is becoming marginal. Like you, I can't quite work out what the failure mechanism here is but I'd love to know.

Our other two cars have the charcoal canister in the engine bay, so I might just see if I can correlate the pump behaviour with the vehicle.

I also had problems with a few gas stations at first, but later i could not fill normally anywhere, so i suggest you to check that filter and/or rubber tubes that connects to it, they can be clogged too, and not letting gas fumes out of the tank while you are filling, so the gas pistol thinks that the tank is full. Some stations have higher flow rate than others, and if the charcoal filter is half clogged, some stations works better than others, but eventually... :(

Well, Tiger is 16 years old and as far as I know, the charcoal tank is the original.

Since the emissions are 100% I'm not going to play about, but this is something I will keep in mind.
