UIM and LIM

Hi, I have an st200 UIM that I want to swap out on my cougar v6.....I will be doing this when I change the plugs and leads at the end of the month.....I was wondering how difficult is it to change the LIM as I have sourced one off an ST200 with the green injectors.....is it worth the hassle of changing it? and what difficulties will I face while changing it?

As far as i know some later V6's came with the st200 lim as standard so depending on age you might not have to change it. It will have either D or T stamped on the butterfly plates, i believe T places it as the st200 item. Also the general feeling is that green injectors are not needed as the standard ones work fine, green ones supposedly cause rough running unless the ecu is remapped. I haven't changed mine so can't comment on how easy or not it is. With the uim, watch the 2 plastic vacuum pipes at the top of it, can break quite easily when trying to remove them.

Hopefully that helps a little, I am by no means an expert on these cars!

I may just leave it, I am going to be changing the UIM as I picked one up and i'll be changing the plugs and leads anyway....thanks for the info :)

Here is a photo of the standard uim with the st200 one taken when i done mine. St200 obviously on the right. Are you planning to do the throttle body as well?

Picture is not showing.....I was thinking about it, I had a look at my one and it looks like someone has tried to enlarge it themselves as it looks like someone just got a dremmel down there....very rough.....:/ after these couple of bit's i'm going to get it remapped in the new year.....

The photo is fine, There is a way to check which LIM you have, look between the gaps to the fuel rail, there is a plastic cover over the top of the fuel rail, if this is flat then you have the older smaller LIM, if the top of the plastic cover is rounded then you have the larger LIM, There really is not much point changing any of it unless you intend to complete the air flow from the air filter through the Throttle body then the UIM and then the LIM the decat headers and exhaust, a re-map will be needed after as you could well be down on power after all that too.
You don't need to change the injectors to the green ones, it's more hassle than it's worth, the loom is different, then the standard ECU will not run them correctly and so on... I have done this myself at least 4 times on Cougars i have owned and there is not a vast difference in performance unless you do the whole lot together, this includes decat headers and decent exhaust. at most it will feel ever so slightly more responsive.
If you search for ST200 UIM there are loads of topics on this all over the forum, it has been done so many times.. (y)

Oh i also forgot, new gaskets may be needed, i would check the condition of the ones you have as you take the UIM off, if they look flattened or nicked in any place at all i would replace them, or you will get an air leak on the seal and it will be a waste of time.. (y)

do you no how much bhp all that gives u?

Very little... realistically it should with a re-map take you to around the 200bhp, some have pushed just over it, but it's a lot of work and money for 30bhp..
I would still do it again just for the sake of it, but i now know not to expect too much from quite a bit of money and work, the best thing i ever did was upgrade the brakes and then fit the strut braces with decent tyres fitted..
If you want a fast car, either do as Bob did and get a 2 litre and turbo it, or sell the cougar and buy a fast car.. ;)
The problem is, we all love the cougar, that's why we are here... selling it would be far too easy and not much fun.. so brakes and handling would be first next time i get another Cougar.. (y)

I can too, but I can see myself doing it. I have never owned a car that I was done tinkering with. (y)

I can assure you it won't be long before i am doing it again, I have already started gathering bits for the next Cougar, I am still searching for that very clean ebony...

We will never be done tinkering, we love our cars and we keep wanting to improve them in our own way :)
