Hi Apologies if this question has been asked before - but - I know the cat need 5w30 engine oil but there is fully synthetic or part synthetic, which one is the one to use? I have seen posts where folks talk about using part synthetic but in the cougar owners guide it goes on about the oil should be Ford spec WSS-M2C913-A, which as far as I can see is fully synthetic.

Which one guys? And also does it really matter so long as its 5w30, kept topped up & changed regularly?

Im talking about the v6 here

It is very difficult to obtain Ford Formula E semi synth. now as they have moved on to Formula F fully synth. If your engine has been used to the semi it is advisable to stick with the same stuff but from another maker, eg Castrol, as long as it meets the Ford spec. for your engine.

Our C1 has spent nearly all of it's life on Ford Formula E (semi-synth) until the last two services where it's had Formula F (fully synth).
It still runs smooth and quiet with over 140k on the clock.

The ST200 had Comma semi-synth for it's running-in period followed by Formula F. No probs at all.

As long as the bottle says it meets Ford spec you should be ok.

Fully synthetic is just more chemically stable, that's all. The mineral content of oils breaks down when exposed to heat and other chemicals (fuel and combustion products) and will slowly change it's composition over time. Fully synthetic remains unchanged, so it allows manufacturers to stretch out the service intervals so that the car appears cheaper to run compared to competitors to the shop-by-numbers brigade. It still needs changed obviously to remove carbon deposits and metal particles, but the oil itself stays the same grade throughout unlike mineral oil.
