This is what my car has covered since last May when I had the MOT done. I am strongly leaning towards letting it go I think as I can quite clearly see I am not using it as it should be. I actually thought I had used it more than that. A lot will depend on the next MOT and we will see what crops up I guess.

wow..and i thought i was doing well with just 910 miles in melina last year..

it should fly through the mot if thats all youv'e done since the last mot...although id take it for a good run and get it hot or the catalitic might not do its job too well..

Is she not your daily driver then, Peter?

As for me, I'm struggling to understand how I'm doing 10K miles a year given that my annual commute distance is 3680 miles. Am I really doing 7K miles to shows and meets and the shops?!

My cat sits in the garage off the car all year around until I actually drive the car to the test centre which I usually take the car for a good run before hand so no worries there with the emissions.
No Chris, my car has not been used in that way since I took on the club after my exit from British Airways over 20 months ago now. As I have said before the car is useless for my business needs on a daily basis. All I have been doing with it is taking it out once a week to give it a little outing so it is not sat there in the garage. This is the problem I face with it now. I can not get to any shows because of my work and working life due to always being busy at weekends.
But even I was shocked at how little I have actually used it. Included in that 397 miles was a trip to Badminton hall to visit everyone as well last year which is at least a 100 mile round trip. So if you take that away as well it is under 200 miles.

Well, okay.

Jinxy (Tracey's Tomcat) does about 500 miles a year. "High days and holidays" as they say. Now, bear in mind that this car has had around £3,000 spent on it. It is literally a show car.

So. My question would be this: Do you love your Cougar enough to let her be a garage princess like Jinxy is? Can you afford to do so?

If so, good for you. You've got a great toy that we'd love to see on its rare outings.

If not, get rid. You can move on and nothing of value (to you) is lost.

Well this is the point it has come to now. The way you have just described my situation is pretty much spot on. I do find myself looking at things like Porsche, Jaguar, Mercedes etc which in my eyes is a massive jump up in over all standard of car marque. Now I mean this as no disrespect to the Cougar at all, it does tick all the boxes for me but if I am really to have something just sat there as a toy then it might as well be a very very nice toy instead.

Well, if you want to buy a more expensive car that just sits around like your Cougar does, I'm not going to judge you.

All I will say Peter is take your time to think about it carefully! I regretted selling the Zetec Fourby, that's no slight on the John Deerr at all - but the difference was it was my car. I'd taken "The Ugly" and made it my own - was missing it within a week.

Totally understand where you're coming from - I'm over it now and more than happy with the Jap fleet now. Take it for a drive one afternoon.....enjoy it. Then put it back in the garage and decide "will I regret it if I get rid of it?". Only you will know the answer!

This is the thing, when I do take it out it still makes me feel very good indeed about what I have done to this car and what it has also done for me as well on a personal level. It really is a tough one for me to call and I do struggle with what is actually the right thing to do now with it. It is the classic Heart Vs Head situation and I am very torn by it all now.
I fully understand what you are saying John and I can imagine what it did feel like as I had to do this many years ago with a car I had but that was actually an easier choice than this because I needed a different car at that time due to the Twins being born and the car I had was no good for them.

If you can afford to let it sit there, then keep it. I still miss my Mustang every single day, not just because it was a great car, but because I'd made it mine because of all the work I'd put into it. My blood, my sweat. We invest part of ourselves into our cars every time we get the spanners out...
Some other guy might be driving it now, but in my mind, it's still 'my' car...

This is the thing though, I do have the room but it is next to useless to me right now. Well only covering 397 miles kind of tells you it all really. As I said before I thought I had used it more than that.

Yes, but then you went on to say that you'd buy something two orders of magnitude more expensive that will do the same mileage.

I don't get it. Are you thinking of any replacement car as an investment? Because that's the only way it makes sense. My finances are nobody's business, but if I wanted to buy a 911, I could. Know what I would buy if I had an empty parking space? Another Cougar.

I'm just a little lost here, and my takeaway is that you're losing faith in your car. That's fine, but just phrase it that way.

It is a bit of both, the thing is right now I can afford pretty much what ever I want. I know my car mechanically is 100% great. But from what Tony has turned up with his car has got me thinking how bad is my car really underneath now and can I really be that bothered to place any more effort into it these days when I could just go out and buy a Porsche 911 or Nissan GTR tomorrow for example. I guess this MOT will coming up in May will be the deciding factor + I will then get to have a really good look under it and an honest poke around to see if I want to continue with the car.

This will all come to light when it is put in for the MOT. Between now and then I guess I might add around 50 miles to it. So we will see but I think I know what is coming seen as I have not done a thing to the car since the last MOT at all.
