I am interested in converting my Cougar to a 4x4 system. How much does it cost and long does it take?

It depends on what your budget is, if you can find one the Mondeo 4x4 is the cheapest option, not sure how much it would be as i havnt seen any mondeo 4x4 cars for sale recently, for £2600 you can get the AWD system from the Volvo XC90 and have custom drive shafts made up, the gearbox is a direct swap for the MTX75

Hi Johnny.
As Procomm says finding a mk1 mondeo 4x4 is the way to go realistically, this has the correct rear subframe and fuel tank too.

Finding one will not be easy, I think there's only about 20 left in the country

Interesting idea with the volvo gear!

Mondeo 4x4 parts are like rocking horse poo these days. It's not just bolt on however. Lots of modifications needed - 4x4 rear subframe, weld on hangers for the prop, modify the sump to fit the transfer box in, custom exhaust as the transmission tunnel will be full of propshaft, fabricate fuel filler, mod the rear floor to fit the fuel tank in. If it's a V6 you'll need a Jag X-Type rear manifold and move the altinator to the front. Lots of work but it's been done (I've owned two of them - a V6 and a Zetec). Transforms the Cougar, real fun to drive ;)

4X4 = Power loss on the road.

For all the work involved, to be honest not shooting anyone down, but why bother?

To note, you never know The 'john deere' could be for sale in the future :)

It can also be done with Subaru parts and a Chevy V8 matched to a longitudinal tranny which negates the power loss (y)

Just for interest I had a look online and found a '97 Mondeo 2l 4x4 Ghia for sale ... £2,900 !

I was one the persons responsible for building this and in the words of Nick the other person involved " Never again!!!!!!!!! " .The v6 is too much trouble.

I'm not sure there are many topics which have been met with "it can't be done", rather "why on Earth would you sink so much money and effort in to what you'll end up with?".
