The Continental was the luxury version of the Mercury Marquis, which in turn was the big brother of the Cougar. Another classic example of platform re-use.
Some say it was a bad thing, (and many of you will have heard the "Mondeo in drag" comment) but I think that the consolidation was quite positive. We've got a lot of great cars today that we simply wouldn't if the manufacturers insisted on building from the tyres up every time.
Well, the MX5 is a great car that's essentially a wholesale clone of half a Lotus and half some non-entity BMC from days of yore.
I'm peeved by discussions that equate to "well, X is just a Y with..." too.

What was the lowrider convertible that (I think) Ice T drove in Boyz in the Hood? Whatever it was, I seem to remember thinking it cooler than a polar bear's paw.

When I was a kid, the Impala was in 6th generation. The sedan was the absolute epitome of the FBI car and about as far away from being pimp as it's possible to be, without being an asthmatic albino.
I'm sorry I managed to skip over your post. Thank you - and I'm glad you enjoyed it! The big V8s are actually very tame: the Mercury V8 (of any sort apart from the early RX7) is completely underpowered, has no real intake sound at all, and are just very long-lived. But you can do amazing things with them if you have the time, space, and a good chassis...
I love the cougar kitten in your signature by the way. You won't know this, but I grew up with them in my neighbourhood and they're critically endangered because humans suck. There's only 90 Florida panthers left, (the cougar, panther and puma are the same animal - the name they get is regional). Cougars aren't very worldly-wise like domestic cats are, and so get run over far too often. People like me are doing what we can to help them.
