Well earlier today I unpacked my daughter's little DAB radio and put it on for her, asked if she was OK listening to Heart while she was in her room doing her homework...

Later today (around 2pm I think) she rushed down to me; "Dad they've just been talking on the radio about the new Mercury Cougar..."; and repeated what she could remember.

I'm guessing this will be loosely based on the current Mustang, as per photos on the web, just wondered if any one else heard it.

Wait, what?

Surely there's no way they're going to do this... are they? I mean, it would be more true to the spirit of the Cougar than what we all drive (yes, I know that's heresy) since the original Cougars were Mustangs but;

1) Mercury doesn't exist anymore. Where are they going to position this in the US market? They, uh, already have the Mustang and in terms of equipment, it's far better than any Cougar ever was in comparison to its everyman Ford counterpart. Trust me on this.

2) Further to that, the Mustang name has cachet even here in the UK. The Cougar doesn't unless you're a fan. How on earth are they going to sell it? They had a hard enough time of it with the 8th Generation. Are they resurrecting Mercury? How else can they go up against Audi and BMW when everyone is about the badges? Where would they be stealing sales from - themselves?

3) The Cougar/Kuga model recognition is going to get even worse than it is.

I'd like, no, love to see a 9th Gen Coug, but until I see it at Detroit....

I'm impressed how they managed to talk about something interesting in between the musical toss and adverts they usually put on:LOL:
The Kuga has just been facelifted anyway so as Chris says I can't imagine anymore name confusion.

Had a look on google and cant find any ref to this...

Maybe it was something along the lines of this song came out the same year as the cougar?

I may be proved wrong but, maybe in her enthusiasm and excitement what she actually heard was an add for the new Ford KUGA?
As Chris already said, Mercury don't exist anymore and i very much doubt Ford have any plans to re-instate that division.
