Audible warning noises

Can anyone tell me why my Cougar sounds an audible "bonger" for a few seconds when the ignition key is turned to position II? The noise stops when the engine starts at position III. The manual says nothing about it at all.

I always thought it was a Pre ignition test of the sensors bit like the old POST beep on a computer

Yup, seatbelts. My Focus 'bongs' once you get up to 15mph without a belt on, no matter if you are in the drivers, passenger or rear seats. Great idea, well at least I think so.
