Autocar first drive....

The poor old Probe gets a bad press, I thought it was a beautiful looking car and faster than the Cougar too I reckon.

The Probe was a overnight Marmite moment for me ie: When i first saw it i loved it, brilliant sexy looking car then one day out of the blue, i saw it in a completely different light. To me it took on the look of a squashed Granada Scorpio, now the Granada i liked, but the Scorpio imo was probably Fords worst ever abortion and from that day on, i changed my view. Sorry Matt ;).
I did however own a W reg for about 2 weeks. it was a 2.0, with the Mazda lump in it and wow, off the spot it left the cougar sitting in the park, what it was like at the top end i have no idea, i never took it past 0.5ltr oil in 200 yards .

Always liked the looks of the Probe (always been a sucker for pop-up headlights), and I'd have a Scorpio in a heartbeat (particularly the 24v Cosworth version)

god i love red cougars..was soo nice to read an honest and not lets slag of a ford review for once...

totally agree with u there alan about brainfart fords. and what u said about poor ol mercury's demise, seems totally logical as ford are a bunch of bas*****!
i wonder if it would have sold better if they had left the mercury badge on it...people were getting sick of fords then as they were deleting all the great ford classics...escort ,capri ,granada

ive got a scorpio yes yes the bug eye one...but it is a facelift one where they removed the 70's chrome.

u ether hate them or love em...i hated it...till i drove it to wales and back...and i gotta say it has a funny way of making you love it.
i havent met anyone yet who has owned one for an amount of time that hasn't loved em.
can't for love or money get it away from the wife..and yet it gets more wow comments from passers by than melina...damn it.

i kid u not we were at a cake show last week and i saw a car pull up and take pictures of it..i was stunned...and my missus very smug:cautious:

I quite like the rarity of the Cougar. I enjoy driving something that people don't recognise simply because she's so unique! Even though she's just a Mondy, her shape is sublime and I get asked (mainly by my security guys at work because they have to log her in as something) what sort of Jag/Aston she is.

I always say "Mercury Cougar".

What I'm not fond of is the fact that keeping her alive is eventually going to cost me as much as an old Triumph.

as much as an old triumph....so your talking about replacing the entire shell then:LOL:

I agree its nice to have something that very few people know what it is and has stood the test of time well , to me also around the time the last cougar was rolling of the line is when cars started to loose their 'soul'... unless your spending stupid money now all modern cars look the same imo and can only be described as small ,medium or large with no styling differences between the makes and models.

Only problem I have is when I tell people its a cougar(who arent looking at it) they think its a kuga

Not ALL modern cars are the same, my other car is a Citroen DS5, bought it largely because of the interior but the externals equally unique. As to it being recognised I recently got off with a parking fine, there was numerous errors on the ticket but it was named as a Citroen X5. I like different odd ball stuff.
Nice to see the cougar was appreciated by the journos of the day, hell even Clarkson liked it.

Right on the money Chris, there is something quite smug about being in traffic in something your not going to see every five mins coming the other way eg a BMW coupe, Audi, coupe or Merc, and of course it is such fun watching the double take looks and over hearing bar room experts explaining its a smal jag based on a Mondeo !, and of course by removing the ford badge it adds to the confusion

2016-09-11 14.39.47.jpg2016-09-11 14.40.38.jpgYes, good positive review! I agree about Red Cougars, Ford should have made them available in UK!

Did anyone else notice that the Zetec motors were made in Bridgend?

Since the vehicles themselves were apparently delivered to Germany fully built, that means that not only the lights (made in Mexico) and the windows (apparently made in Europe), that means that those engines were built in the UK(?) shipped to Michigan, installed and then shipped back again.

I don't have an axe to grind here, but it's very interesting. Perhaps the result of being a global corporation.
