in the middle of a nightmare week with ma v6 cougar , needed 2 new drive shafts at the weekend due to failed abs rings and a couple of drop links into the bargain , and today been told by the garage that the gearbox is needing replaced as the diff is locked , surely not a coincidence that they replaced drive shafts and now I have a issue with diff lock . Really not looking forward to the garage getting back to me with price for latest fix , the 17yr old might need to be gone , at its current rate of spends is costing more than i'm earning .

I think you need to find a new garage. Abs rings failing do not warrant new driveshafts, sounds to me like they are fleecing you
if they were very careless when inserting the new shafts they could have indeed messed up the planetary gears in the diff as the shafts are directly connected to these...they are also a known weak spot on these gearboxes...
not an expensive part to buy secondhand and are popular due to them being identical to the mondeo mk2 , but a day job to do the swap.

as paul above has said ,abs rings can be brought separately..and require separation from the hub to do....but i guess its too late for that..

WOW! CV joints replacements at the most but these garages really know how to fleece don't they. Educated guess at the scenario: slap new shafts in position loosely, thump driveshafts into diff housing from hub carrier?
