I really dont think mileage is much of an issue on most modern cars especially a V6, as it never really has to work that hard, I have had a 4 pot high mileage petrol xantia, which was bought from a company I worked for and it had full citroen history, and I can say it was one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned, I got rid of it with 200,000 on the original engine and clutch, and my friend had it another year with no troubles before he sold it on and it was still going around till it got used in a ram raid lol,
wrong place to extol the virtues of french cars... if charliecd001 finds this thread he really will go to town lol.
You are right though. I had a chat with bobster the other day. My v6 is approaching 100k (rapidly) but the engine (apart from a slight IMRC fault) is running as sweet as a nut.
As he put it, the shell has done 100k but the engine has been so well maintained its better than many others with much lower mileage.
V6's should last for a good 200k+ if they are maintained regularly and fluid checks are made very often.

Now now Si I like xantia's cos most of them are dead now!!! As has been previously said if the v6 has been looked after will do loads of miles. If worse comes to worse its usually the big ends on the v6 that suffer if caught early enough this is reparable .
I agree if its been looked after they go on for many miles, its better if there is service histiory, but like many owners on here who have had there cat for years (not me still new) if they have been doing there own repairs and servicing, its probably been well looked after and if anything over maintained,but book won't have been stamped, i think a lot is down to first impressions and how you feel about it and in car after starting and a drive

I would start it up from cold and listen for any knocks bangs thuds etc, check the oil cap and expansion bottle for signs of head gasket failure and take it for a test drive, and try out all the electrics. aircon etc.
Also once warm floor it above 3000 rpm just to see if it kicks in properly,
And if you like it and everything seems ok then go for it, as your getting a lot of car for the money with a cougar.
And if you know that the seller is sound then that's a bonus

Oh I don't know, I bought my '96 P Laguna in 2003 with 105,000 on the clock. I sold it in 2007 with 158,000 and it never missed a beat. As far as I know it's still being used as a daily driver to this day.

I had the laguna rti 16v with the volvo lump and only 90k on the clock and it never missed a beat and not a speck of rust on it anywhere. I was a fool as I let it go for £100 as it was sitting on my drive doing nothing, only to see it driving around the following week.

Yes i pm'ed alan about his thanks it looks really nice, ive just sold my transit van on fleebay so waiting for them to collect and get some more money of my wife,,,,hmmmmmm will have some sweet talking to do...lol

That's exactly the one I had, 2.0 16v RTi Sport. Volvo N7Q engine, iirc. It'd sit on the autobahn at a steady 100MPH with the aircon on full whack, doing 35mpg, I also got (indicated) 140MPH out of it on a long straight.

Dean, on a serious note, I have no doubt your relative would not rip you off, but that said, consider what the value is to you and dont feel compelled to go for it, if it doesn't feel right.

Hi all well my brother in law emailed me with this info -
high milage on the mondeo/cougar st24 dualtech engine isn't a problem there a good solid engine. There isn't any running problem, oil/water leaks. All the electric's work windows, mirrors and so on.
As for service history i only have the last 3yrs of mot's and receipts for any work that was done which to be fair was nothing really. It had a new horn and a few other little things. I brought it with a leaking rad so i replaced that and then noticed there was a rumble from the waterpump so i did that at the same time......
So no service history with it Hmmmmmmmm not so good now me thinks....

Without wanting to upset anyone I would think hard before buying an auto unless you really love 'em. I had autos for years. My last one was a 528iSE which was a cracking car but not half as much fun as my manual V6 cat. iirc the V6 auto is the slowest of the 3 cats so, in my mind it sort of defeats the objective - also - given the mileage and lack of service history - if anything does go wrong with the auto box it could well cost you as much as you are paying for the cat in the first place to put it right - just my opinion
