Car insurance to get a shake-up?

Had a little quote for a lambo.

Okay - I compared the Meerkats and used a voluntary £100 excess. Our details are probably different, but I'm 38 and most of the quotes were around £1200-£1300.

Hilariously, my Mk3 Rover 216 with 5 'performance' modifications would've been £850 if I'd renewed it two years ago. Proof - if any were needed - that the underwriters are not clueless, but clinically insane.

Oh I do love these insurance debates :D after paying more and more each year ( no thanks to speeding tickets still hanging around for five years on my record) I conciderd this black box the other day when getting a quote for the Cougars replacement, I say I conciderd it but only for about two seconds, my reasoning if I have to drive round watching my speed etc. I'm more likely to have an accident as I'm not concentrating on just driving. Maybe I could get a lower quote, who knows? The quote I got without was half what I paid this year for the Cougar which is good, but still my 12+ years no claims means diddly if you ask me. Most expensive quote for cat this year was £20,000+ I kid you not, I could have insured an S5 for less lol (about£2500)

Insurance is very strange to me, my quotes for fully comp are always cheaper than third party f+f ? Crazy!

I hate to be blunt Matt, but that is exactly what most of us do as a matter of course and is why many of us have clean licences. Those who pay little regard to their speed are invariably the ones who end up with points and higher insurance premiums.

My black box didn't measure speed or anything daft like that, just that I wasn't allowed to be out past 11 or before 5am or I would incur a £100 fine.
Luckily I'm boring and didn't :D

Get a Hummer, they are surprisingly affordable to insure, it's just the fuel you pay for

Now THAT would be an interesting drive lol
Its worth noting that premiums haven't risen because people speed, its all the uninsured driving about and people making false claims to make money.
I'm sure the box wouldn't track what time of day you was out but it would show were you had been and were the car was parking which could help the insurance companies decide if you spend too much time in a high risk area, or if you lie about usage etc. I.e. No 0to60 sprints or track time

It was a curfew, they installed a gps box in my car and basically did as you say, check where the car was parked and if it moved, bill me 100notes.

Any one notice insurance group makes no ounce of difference?

Dunno what age you are or what your circumstances are, but insurance groups are more about which cars insurers are even prepared to consider insuring you on according to their own criteria. They don't really mean a great deal however because the car-based risk is more to do with how often that make, model and spec of car is involved in claims, so my old-man 620Ti or S-Type will be cheaper for me to insure than a Golf GTi despite being bigger, better and faster because Rovers and Jaguars are statistically driven a damned sight better than Volkswagens are, and certainly better than anything that's ever had a GTi badge stuck to the back.

I really, really wish I'd listened 10 years ago when I thought I knew everything and older people were being boring, but if you have the luxury at the moment of a nice income and no outgoings, then please please please please please get a normal car for transport, save up a deposit and buy yourself a flat.

Cars are a crap hobby. In winter they're always covered in mud and salt. In summer they're always splattered with insects and bird poo. Every year there's less you're allowed to do with a car, and every year what you are allowed to do costs more. Nobody else gives a toss about your car and despite your best efforts (i.e. all your money) they accumulate door dings and stone chips, and whether you drive it or not it depreciates in value and deteriorates in condition. Driving is made out to be really glamourous, but it's mundane.

Buy a property when you're young and it'll be paid off before you're old, then you'll *truely* have income (but better, as you climb the career ladder) but no (well, minimal) outgoings and you can take 5* resort holidays, buy a car/boat/plane/helicopter/French Maid/pony/whatever with your truely disposable income. Don't kid yourself you have no outgoings if you're still fairly young - you don't, it's just that real life hasn't claimed it yet - which you can be damned sure it will, so get ahead of the game and buy a property before you're tied up in car loans, credit cards, insurance premiums, broadband and mobile phone contracts, Sky TV and all that rubbish.

You never own a fast car. It owns you.

Was there a reason for a curfew mate if you don't mind me asking?
I meant to say yes the time and date will be stamped, however I doubt they could say you can't go out after a certain time of day, that would affect your whole life.
If I had one it would show me parked up at a pub all day (n) not exactly something that could reduce my premium is it lol (not that I could do anything about it as thats were I work)
