Cheap tyres: an object lesson

I have Hankooks on the back of mine, much prefer them to the Avons they replaced. If I had to fault them it'd be that thesidewalls aren't very stiff which makes the rear of the car squirm around a bit, just takes a bit of getting used to.

This probably isn't helped by the fact that they're 225s and I have a rear strut brace so I guess the tyres are the only available thing left to flex.

Good tyres overall I'd say.

I was put off the Hankooks after reading that the sidewalls were very soft. I went for the Avon ZV5. Although TBH I never really push my tyres, but when you accidentally take a corner too fast you want them to stick.

A bit of a lesson here maybe. In my experience you generally get what you pay for.
Thanks for the post Mako, glad you are OK.

They are sticky enough Rod there's no doubt there, as I said I think I've compounded the issue by putting 225s on a 7" rim.

I have Falken FK452s on the front (excellent tyre) and these let go before the rear does.

I have zv5's on my vrs and they are stunning tyres.

Extremely happy with them.

I agree with luke though. Best all round tyre I have ever had is uniroyal rainsports 2...so the 3 must be good, surely

Your right the Hankooks do squirm quite a bit but a couple of extra PSI seem to help that though, currently running 33 Front 31 rear on my 225/50-16's

Yes Scunny tyres are such a subjective thing i used to have Falken FK452 on a Golf Gti anda Leon Cupra and every one i spoke to about them said they were cheap and nasty but i loved em' well on 2 different VW platform cars they were great, bit of road roar, but the grip was very good, and i'm not someone who tends to hang around on occassions !!

I had Hankook 225/50-16's all round on my c2, don't remember them being worse than the more upmarket brands I had before, they were about £75 each I think, best tyres I've ever had on a car were some Yokohama A510's they stuck like glue whatever the weather

The best tyres I ever had were Uniroyal RTT-2 . They were the great on my Renault 19 and it handled like it was on rails. The best handling car I have ever had by a mile + there tyres in the wet were unreal. I also ran a set of Goodyear F1's which were also very good.
The only downside to both tyres were they wore out pretty fast.

The Daddy Wagon is wearing Conti Sport 5's all round. I had them fitted over the course of the year. I started with the 2 fronts as the car had CS2's on when I got it and then gradually did rears to match. They are great but with how prices have changed in the last few months, you can get Michelin Pilot Sport 2's and in places 3's.

There's simply no contest! I have driven an M3 pretty hard on the Conti's and yes they are superb but I then drove an M3 and a C63 both wearing MPS3's and the difference was unreal. Next set of boots I need, if I can get Pilot Sports for the same money, I'm going to. Through my own fault, I've had to replace an odd number of tyres this year which is why I've stuck to the Continentals. I aim to swap these about to get an even wear so that next time I'm buying 4 together.
