I have only just heard about this and thought it only affected Diesels but apparently not-
In London, all but the newest diesel cars will face a £12.50 charge to drive in the planned ultra-low emissions zone (Ulez), which would cover the same central area as the current congestion charge zone.
Under the plans, diesel cars that are more than four years old in 2019 and petrol cars that are more than 13
years old will face the charge 24 hours a day, year-round, in a bid to cut air pollution.

They'll do whatever than can now mate but its the same as a lot of things no real investment in any alternatives. They say they want people to stop smoking but they will only ever make a half-arsed attempt at it because it brings in too much tax revenue.

X
The technology now exists to do away with petrol cars..but as matt said if they lose the fuel revenue they would go bust!!
Alot of car companies brought in to the technology to replace petrol cars but then quietly put a lid on it..... for financial reasons..
They won't give us an alternative until they can find a way to screw us for the new tech.... or we simply run out of oil in which case even the engineering that goes into everything we use will have to substantially change...

As for London...I don't go there if I can help it... best avoided me finks.

And they wonder why the high street shopping is on the decline, if cars get banned from city centre`s or you are taxed for using them on top of parking charges then they will become a wast land, internet shopping will be the only form for most, they bang on about not being active in modern life but walking around the high street is ecercise a lot won`t get if eveything comes to your door by post or delv van, out of town retail parks seem to be the way things are going at the moment, how long before they target those to ?.

I haven't read the linked article, but I do know that those vehicle ages aren't arbitrarily picked; they match the indtroduction dates of Euro-4 and Euro-6.

It's something that I'm keenly aware of because of T's involvement in the industry. Fun fact: Euro-6 Diesels are less fuel-efficient than Euro-5, but they pollute less. You should've seen the rush of orders (for Euro-5 trucks) that Scania saw when the new standard was annnounced. On a 3-year lease of a vehicle that might well be running 16 hours a day (with two different drivers) those fuel costs add up.

Lastly, I do think that it's important we manage the air in our cities. I don't deny it. But my Cougar puts out lower emissions than a 10-year-old Focus. What's fair about me being charged more?

Here's a proposal: Since MOTs and emissions tests are all electronically recorded, link that database to the Congestion/Pollution Charge one, and tax people based on how much pollutant they will discharge into the local atmosphere.

Yeah my Euro5 Mondeo (2 litre TDCi) does less MPG than my old 2 litre TDCi Euro4 Mondeo - weird. But when you say less emissions I guess you mean NOx and particulates - however, if you use more fuel you have no option but to put more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. So to protect out short term health, we compromise on global warming . .

How about just paying tax on the mileage we do ? oh no sorry that's already taxed; fuel tax. So why not increase fuel tax ? Oh no, transport companies will be screwed . . it just goes on and on . .

I went with out a car for 14 years till i got the Cougar, in that time i walked to work and used the bus, train and taxi, health wise i felt no fitter just got cold and wet and shopping for food was a right pain as you either cart everything in shopping trollys or wait in for a delv, going out for the day was hopeless unless where you wanted to go was near a bus/train station and the cost per trip often worked out more, the train is a complete rip off, expensive, unreliable, no where to put shopping trollys and often no seats, the bus is little better, once a pram or wheel chair comes on again no where to put any shopping apart from your lap if you have a seat, after 14 years of that i think i have earned my v6 :devilish:
