Hi folks

We are thinking of buying a cougar its a 2.0 on a 2000/W reg with 109k miles. looks tidy and has a good read up.
we haven't yet been to see the car itself as I would like to know what to actually be looking out for and what to check.
Rust is the obvious thing, like with any car but does anybody have any further tips and hints?

Thanks

Rob

Wishbones are top of the list if they have not been done they will prob need doing very soon and your looking around 300 plus if you can do the work yourself

Rear sub frame rust is also starting to show on a few cars now as well

Thanks for the info!

Its just had a clutch and service approx 4k miles ago.
the owner has stated it had 2 advisories on the mot, front anti roll bar linkages had play (new parts come with car, just not fitted)
and rear anti roll bar bushes need replacing (again new bushes supplied, just not fitted).
how would you got about checking the wishbones ? and rust on the rear subframe, if its only surface i can treat the rust and paint it. if its too far gone will it need a whole new subframe?

Thanks

The ball joint end is not an issue as that can be replaced. It's the bushes on the subframe end that can't individually replaced. If there was not advisory on the mot...I would not worry.

The bits you mention are not expensive or particularly difficult for someone with half a clue

ok Thanks for the info guys! :D

so... hopefully we'll have a cougar tomorrow. i'll be taking my dad in my fiesta and i always carry a few tools and a trolley jack so.. will be getting the jack out and have a good look underneath and check the wishbones and such like.

Thanks again.

I'll get some pics up hopefully "fingers crossed" :D

Well.... we've got it!

its 2000 on a W reg 2.0 zetec in silver with 109k miles. 12 months mot and just had 6 months tax put on it.
has two small advisories on the mot, anti roll bar bushes and front anti-roll bar linkage. (anti roll bar bushes came with the car).
in fairly good condition (needs a damn good clean tho') loads of previous mot's, handbook, service booklet and receipts (in feb and march) it had over £700 spent on various bits.
drives well and sounds good, i'll get some pics up tomorrow. (no dents or scratches or rust) - only a small amount of surface rust on the rear sub-frame and will be getting cleaned up and painted in a few weeks).

would anyone like to guess the price paid?

Thanks for all the help guys :)
