My Cougar V6 auto has an oil all over the bottom of the sump is it the sump gasket also the traction control light is illuminated all the time wondering why this is.

A wet sump can also be a symptom of crank oil seal which is common on the V6. The general consensus is if it is the crank seal is don't bother as they start leaking again shortly after replacement.

My old one had a slightly 'weeping' oil leak which I never managed to cure or even properly identify, though I'm also half convinced that part of it was sloppy oil-filling (by me) and the resulting trail of oil down the front of the block seemed to bear this out... there was never any evidence of water getting into the oil indicating a faulty HG, so I wasn't too bothered.
I just made sure the oil level never dropped below the halfway point on the dipstick (nominal oil level on the V6 is at the upper limit to prevent oiling issues under hard cornering) and topped up with a little drop between services.
