i have recently bought a V reg v6 cougar to raplace my v6 probe and the cougar is only giving me around 20 mpg is this normal ? as the probe and the mondeo v6 i had before that both returned around 25 mpg i have many spare parts as i ended up breaking the mondeo for parts and most of it is laying around the place i just need an idea of what is most likely to be the culprit ,the cougar doesn't seem to be as quick as my previous v6's maybe it is connected to the fuel problem .

hi and welcome to club ,car should return around 25 round town and 30/32 on run might be the maf sensor/or secondaires might be open all the time as normal car runs on 16v and when imrc opens secondaires then uses 24v

Hi Paul welcome to the forum, the first port of call would be to give it a good service, change all filters (air, oil, fuel) and plugs, if it's still giving poor mpg after that, then it's to to dig a bit deep.

@droidgordie, the engine runs on 18v with the secondaries closed. ;)

Hello and welcome aboard. I have a similar issue, but I'm still getting 34mpg on a run and 27mpg around town, although my coug is a lot slower than it used to be. Will be taking of the UIM and LIM and cleaning everything shortly. However, as others have already said, give it a damned good service and maybe check the lambda sensors.

thanks everyone looks like i came to the right place ,the brakes were all replaced just before i bought the car and i did have a problem with the linkages for the secondaries which i sorted before i placed my post , i plan to replace the imrc as my next job and i think i have a set of plugs knocking about in the garage i have a maff i can put on i have ditched the standard air filter in favour of an induction kit cant beat the sound of a v6 with an induction kit ,nothing i have done so far has improved the fuel consumption but i have a lot to be getting on with ,i have also discovered that the aux belt doesn't go around the air con pump either someone just fitted the wrong one or there is a problem with the pump i wont know till i get the belt on i dont think it should affect the fuel having the wrong belt but maybe it upsets the engine balance i have no idea to be honest but when i get everthing sorted hopefully it will come right having trouble moving the belt tensioner cant get a tool on the tensioner

Welcome mate
I have a shorter belt on mine because the aircon clutch is knackered, keeps it mobile until I get the aircon compressor replaced. Has no effect on anything else. If you want the correct belt assuming it is a manual V6 you want a 6PK1818 (Gates number) from your local motor factor, half the price of the Fraud one
