I spent the morning clearing the garage to put Heti back into her winter nest. I swapped the new tyres from back to front and then backed backed her in.
Jacked her up until I can fit my oversize ramps under the wheels. Pulled and tugged at the bush /bearing mentioned above. No noticeable movement. Pulled and tugged at the gearbox end of the drive shaft no noticeable movement.
OK time for the wheel to come off. Jack her up, to take the weight off the wheel, slide two axle stands and a block of wood under the box section that is under the driver seat. Remove wheel. Slide ramp rearward and place it under the sill, fill gap between ramp and sill with timber blocks in case the axle stand fail. Place the removed wheel under the chassis box section under the passenger seat, pack the gap with timber blocks in case the two axle stands and two ramps fail. Pull the caliper off the disc to let me spin the shaft more freely. No noise from the bush but the differential is quite noisy, more than I would expect. I noticed what I guess is the reversing lights switch moving as I spin the shaft in different directions. Notice a minor oil leak coming from the area of this switch. Drain gearbox oil, It's far thinner than I expected and ejaculated beyond the container. Quickly move container to catch spillage. Leave to drain, watch rugby and drink beer. Tomorrow I plan to pour the oil into an old engine oil container straining it through some fine cloth. My idea being if there is any swarf I'll catch it, this will probably condemn the gearbox if I find any. Can I pull the gearbox without pulling the engine ? Can I fit a 6 speed if I have to change the box? Any one got an ST200 or ST220 engine with Manual box surplus to requirements? Just considering the options.
