You must forgive me but i straid from the path this week and joined the Ford owners club site, im afraid the lack of a cougar site fix while it was down was more than i could take so looked for another fix some where else :giggle:, now as the site was for all things Ford i thought i was in the right place but in retrospect im not so sure, first there is a long list of forums dedicated to single models, all the usual suspects are there and a few off the wall ones like the Transit van and the Ranger pick up but no Cougar, the other one with the K is there, the Mustang to so its not an anti US thing but no Cougar, on searching the site i saw a post by another Cougar owner asking why, to which he got the reply " not enough of them around mate ", strange attitude to take and hardly going to keep anyone around that has one, 2nd post i found was things you hate ?, to which one member quipped " Cougar v6 "" :cautious:, now i may have a sensitive spot when i see anti Cougar posts and i know everyone has a right to like or dislike a model but come on hate ! thats a little strong, saw the hateful eight Tarantino film last week, saw Racism,Violence to both man and women, most of the swear words that make you cringe in polite company but i did not see a Cougar even in the background on a snow capped mountin so dont quite get the venom that seems to come the Cougars way on a Ford site, anyway will try to be up beat and see if the profile of the Cougar can be lifted on that site, i fear it may be a lost cause but worth a go, so is there any other members on there from here or on any other Ford sites ?, is the lack of Cougar interrest or anti Cougar feeling a common thing on Ford related sites ? .

I have to be honest, unless you're following the "norm" fiesta, focus, mondeo, etc etc you have a hard time getting anywhere on a "generic" ford site, let's be honest, the mercury brand is luxury, the cougar has a long heritage form it's muscle to the modern cougar...... So to be honest they can keep that "attitude" and I'll keep away :)

I use CEG, NECO & UKC! just because the information is there and people are just that much nicer :)

there is South coast cougars, that has info on there, but a a very small following but is friendly, they was thinking of closing or changing to wider base due to lack of posts and visits by members
a lot on here a few years back where members on both and on the odd occasions that UKC went down would end up there
but this and the last time UKC went down hardly any moved over to there
Ian (lottysvdub) is a member on here as well

Tried to join the NECO site 3 times, set up the profile and got the emails to complete the reg but then nothing so gave up on that one, shame as it seemed a good sight.

Attitude seems the right word to use and a little odd as lets face it the Cougar is in fact a Mondeo coupe under the skin and they seem to love them..

Contact one of the administrators matey, unfortunately in the past NECO has gone through a lot of change (contacting administrators was a pain) but I believe that is now sorted. It is seriously worth joining!

we share more similarities with the ST200...(V6) Yet no one outside of our UKC NECO understand that and almost look down on the cougar.....I'll say again the cougar brand has been years and years longer than any mondeo, focus, fiesta, ok it's gone through change over the years.... But up until production stopped the cougar had a very long life! From the 60s to 2002 (I could be mistaken on dates)

Cougars seem to have a really bad reputation among the Ford community in general.

Of course the car has some common faults, many of which are because of apparently inexplicable decisions made by Ford in its construction. I won't put a list here, but the alternator mounting is probably the one that frustrates me the most. But as far as I can tell, mechanics don't hate them any more than they hate the Mondeo - for good reason - though that can probably be seen as "damning with faint praise".

But I think I've tracked down the reason why they get so much hate. And it's not a pretty one.

See, the one thing that Cougars did as well as a Mondeo was depreciate. And that meant that a relatively quick, good-looking car came into the hands of a certain demographic very quickly. Young black American men.

America - for all its progressiveness - still has a racist streak a mile wide. And that means that as soon as these cars were bought by those people, they were forever associated with the stereotype of drug dealing and gang-bangers. Even Family Guy did a piece about it, where Peter was describing a colleague but didn't want to say "that black guy". Instead, he identified him as a "racial minority of the sort that drives a Mercury Cougar".

And as much as we Brits seem to like looking down our noses at the Americans, we picked up the attitude without really understanding that there was an underlying sterotype.

So anyway, that's my theory. The fact that a drug dealer local to me drives an Ebony (no, really) has nothing to do with it.

hmm must have a look at this site then..im ready for a fight.
probably full of idiots who think restoring a fezza is done by shoving an amp and sub in it..

there are sites where they want to talk about a great looking car and spending the money to keep it and mechanically fix it and make better..

and then there's the sites where all there interested in is the latest pile of lookslikeeveryothercar on the road c**p and how cheap it is to run..
im here because we all have some mechanical knowledge(yes u too matt, my trainee welder) and like tinkering with our cars and being friendly to one another..
i dont go to sites which are full of idiots who cant tell a glow plug from a spark plug and are just there to insult the passer by.

Amen!
I have some knowledge, it's just the putting into practice that's the hard bit:LOL:

Ford Capri Club International (Mansfield Branch) circa 1985. Biggest bunch of up yaself nose in the air snobs i have ever had the misfortune to meet. My membership lasted all of 25 minutes after a "meet" at one of the local pubs.
Now, UKC is on a totally different planet. (y)

Seems like you've done so to great effect recently mate. As much as I wanted to be there for you, it looks like you've not only learned by watching others working on your car, but you've parlayed that into being able to do the job on your own.

Stupid can't be fixed. Inexperience can. You're the poster child for that and I couldn't be happier for you, you big bus-wrangling clownboat.

There is a Facebook group satisford I go on occasionally I'll try posting up my cougar and see if they like it
they seem ok though into older fords
