Going to look at a Cougar

Morning Andy, welcome to the forum!

I'm not the most mechanically minded but I'm certain the other lads will give you some comprehensive advice - main cost I'm aware of are the front suspension arms if the bushes fail.

As for the X-Pack it consists of leather seats, front ones heated and the driver's is electric. You also get a 6 Disc Changer.

Hope the viewing goes well but if you fancy a blue one I put mine up for sale last night lol.

Adam.

Welcome Andy, from another ex-MEG/TalkFord member (from my Mondeo owning days!). I bought my first Cougar 2 years ago and am currently on my second :)

Underneath the Cougar is pretty similar to the Mk2 Mondeo. The main thing to check is the condition of the wishbones (the mileage and age is pretty much bang on for them needing a change). They are the same as the ST200 wishbones and are around £250 a pair plus fitting so make sure they have been changed already (and if they haven't then it's a bargaining chip for the sale price).

Engine wise it's the same as the Mk2 Mondeo again so check for oil leaks, ticking noises (not to be confused with injector tick which is normal) knocking from the bottom of the engine (knackered bottom end - terminal) and smoking (the V6 produces steam from the exhaust on cold days which is quite normal). The usual things you'd check engine wise pretty much :)

Other than that there are not many major 'scary' issues to worry about. Take your time shopping around, there are plenty out there and prices aren't what they used to be so buyer is king as they say. Best of luck with your search (y)

Cheers for the replies guys, (Everton, I remember you!)

Yeah, thought it'd be the usual things. I knew the body was of a MK2 (what I currently have) so it shouldn't be too unfamiliar.

Wishbones - Will have to make a note to thoroughly look at them. Are they the vertical bush ones rather than the horizontal regular ones on MK2 1.8's?

I'm right in thinking that the V6 being a chain driven cam shaft doesn't need anything? Can the chain wear out?

Check the rear subframe too, good secondhand ones are hard to source now, a new one, if you can get one, is £350.00 ish for the part alone. The newer cars appear to suffer with corrosion on the RSF more so than the older ones.

Oh, the blue is Melina Blue, commonly referred to as 'Blurple'. I can't see why you would be bothered about it being Black, it takes some looking after but looks good when you do. Have owned mine for nearly 8 years now and can thoroughly recommend the colour.

Welcome to the Andy, I owned 4 Mondeo's before buying my Cougar over 4 years ago. You're right in saying the V6 has a cam chain, which should last as long as the engine. The wishbones have horizontal bushes, unlike the standard Mondeo, which has vertical bushes. There's no problem with you posting a link up, so give us a look, and there maybe someone nearby who can check it out for you.

Hello Andy and welcome to the forum. I'm sure you'll find what you are looking for and there is a wealth of knowledge on here to point you in the right direction.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!

The rear subframe issue, what should I be looking for then?

Oh and as for not liking black, my current Mondeo is black and yes, after a good wash and polish it looks spectactular. Then five minutes later once i've put the bucket away it looks naaasty! I had another MK2 before that was a lovely light blue and looked the mutts whether dirty or clean!

Welcome to the forum Andy, the place for all things Cougar

Good luck with your search, if you want one that always looks clean buy a frosty :devilish:

Thanks again for the warm welcome!

Having sent off an email yesterday to the seller and having no reply I shall follow it up with a phone call.

What things should I be looking out for the on the test drive? I know about the front end rattles and bangs suggesting wishbone replacements, but I hope to get under there and have a good look at them anyway.

Cruise control can be retro fitted to a manual (several people in the club have done so and I myself am halfway through doing the same) but it was never offered, even as an option, by Ford.

Looks good dude, nice x pack but definitely doesn`t have cruise fitted, steering wheel is standard

I would pay that for it if it drives OK

I'm going to have a look tomorrow, I'll report back, but I'm definitely not set on buying it. The only thing thats putting me off is the mileage, but if the book is stamped and it has the front wishbones done, I reckon it could be a winner.

A 'normally' driven V6 will return mid to high 20s around town and mid 30s on a motorway cruise, spank it down B roads and it'll be in the teens. The computer shows average speed, average MPG, trip distance and miles left in the tank. All this data, if the computer has not been reset in the meantime, is calculated on the last 300 miles covered.
