Great Yarmouth's new Herring Bridge

Interesting day today and one or two of you in the area may have seen this on regional TV or it should be in the papers tomorrow. Great Yarmouth gets a new £130M bridge to ease traffic into the port and new industrial areas. It was well attended and lots of local clubs sent representatives including classic cars. Sadly the Cadillac broke down and everyone had to go around it. In the afternoon and old Steam Drifter, the Lydia Eva a local icon, was first to pass under the newly opened bridge. A friend and I snuck atop a local double decker represesnting the local Blue Bus company - lovely and warm and watched everyone else outside in the low degrees C air....

Should make it easier for us coming in via Acle and the Vauxhaul/Station bridge if southern traffic can avoid it - conversely speed up Yarmouth to Lowestoft leg directly.
Now for Lowestoft to catch up, the Gull Wing (livestream) is also delayed.

Next step is the Vauxhall roundabout, which is the first one after the Acle Straight. That then opens up the possibility of dualling the Acle Straight itself ! I spoke to the Head of Highways England who was there for the opening and he is convinced that the legal battle to stop parts of the A47 around Norwich will soon be overcome. Not that they have actually completely stopped, so this summer is going to be very interesting along that stretch....

A day to remember as £121m Third River Crossing opens

It was a day of celebrations as the long-awaited Third River Crossing opens in Great Yarmouth.

i used to work on the putford ships at great yarmouth...the orange ones...had to go over the old bridge regular.

i think the Viking has been scrapped now tho.

yes we were the commercial part of hughes under paul chisnal.
robert hughes is the chairman, lovely bloke.....altho we're still a part of hughes we operate under the name washco now.
i no longer cover great yarmouth as another engineer joined and took that area over, but im a regular at kings Lynn across to Peterborough..

Yeah I doubt we're close to anyone current, I'm going back to my parents' uncles/aunts being related to the company founders (Lowestoft shop).
Though they are patrons of the King's Lynn retail branch - last 3 lounge TVs etc.

I used to help a few of these vessels with their 'SAAB Tank Radar'. It was a system baed upon a very old IBM PC that monitored and maintained levels in their tanks of fresh and foul water exchanged with the rigs. You soon get to know that the greatest respect you can pay is to take your slippers with you. Whilst the decks and stairs are often grimy, the bridge will be spick and span with plush fitted carpets and woe betide anyone who forgets that !

So the bridge is closed because it’s open but when it’s fixed and they can close it it will reopen. At the same time that it’s closed because it’s open it’s also open to river craft, because it can’t be closed.

Sounds as complicated as the rules for cricket.
