Hi Mat

I didn't use a primer. I prepped with 1500 wet and dry to key the surface then cleaned and applied a transparent adhesion aid specificly for plastic parts and then painted over that.
 
Can't remember the brand name but its an aresol and it is called adhesion aid. It is intended for use on plastic textured bumpers.
 
It works well. spray it on lightly to your prepped surface then dry it off (heat gun or hair dryer), do a 2nd coat dry it off again then get your paint on.
