I bought 16v cougar for peanuts 150 quid it's my stop smoking project I drive my insignia cdti normally I was looking for 1.7 puma originally but got offered this it needs lots of love but intend to do work regardless of cost over time due to spending my 30 pounds a week tobacco habit on this cougar and at least having something to show for it other than destroy my health at moment obvious thing to repair clutch brake discs pads service air con stereo and a little bit of servicing maybe not sure yet head gasket maybe brown water but doesn't over heat even when driven 30 miles lol and some dash bulbs and oh of course any subtle mods I may find on here as I go along looking forward to wealth of knowledge and help this site has seem like a really good crowd can't wait to get started

Hi my names daniel surname john lol thanks for reply hope I can get this car running reliable for my birthday and mot.d on road :-D

Hello, welcome, and good luck sticking to your smoking abstinence!

Did you buy it as an MOT failure? It sounds like it might be based on the list of jobs that you need to do...

Can I suggest that if you haven't done already, you get under there and give the sills a real good poke. Don't be shy about it, either. It would be horrible to do all that work you're planning and find out that you need serious welding done - better to know now so you can either plan for it or get rid.

Hi Daniel, and welcome to UKC.org.
I was watching that car myself and couldn't believe the final bid. Well done to you and hopefully the repairs are all mechanical and cosmetic, and not too much welding.
Loads of useful info in here for such a project as well as the most helpful members anywhere on the net.

Hello and welcome, I am only down the road from you, if you need any advice then I will only be to happy to help if I can. Good luck.

F7oud yes hey be cool can't wait just to get her running and legal can start tarting her up then long way off at mo though time and money  but like my Mrs says I'm a persistent b@#s!:Rd lol

Oxygen sensor is a good start for em warning light. Worth spending £40-50 on a diagnostic for the full car. Halfords auto centres are no nonsense, trusted, and give a comprehensive report.

Dan it's good to....

::Edited because that was irrelevant and stupid::

Seriously though you're welcome to use my OBD scanner. That's basically what Halfords will do. Save yourself the silly money to find out that you've got nothing really wrong.

Prediction: EGR flow insufficient. One or other banks running lean. Feh.

But whatever you find, it'll be cheaper than paying them. Any friend of backseateducation's is a friend of mine so I'm happy to help.

I wouldn't panic about manky coolant, old "red" coolant can look like the contents of an ASP lane*, I've dealt with more 2.0 Zetecs than I care to remember and seen one failed headgasket due to serious abuse with a whole pint of coolant in the system.

An EML is likely to be HEGO (read Lamba, or 02 probe as you prefer) as stated. Without a 'scope there isn't a lot you can prove beyond relying on a fault code.

*Basically raw sewage....

Hey great advice thanks as soon as I get time I'm going get under and started two weeks and I be rolling me sleeves up lmfao just preping my Mrs for my tantrums lol when things go wrong I really chuck the tools out the pram lmfao but always pick em back up and put my head back under bonnet ha ha sucker

Not to jinx it, but those engines have a habit of "just working."

Hopefully there won't be too much spanner chucking, they really are a solid engine.

Hello and welcome aboard Dan. Sounds like you've got a great little project which will keep your hands busy and your mind away from the cancer sticks. Best of luck with it all.
