Hi all new guy on the site.

Had my cougar for over 3 years and enjoying owning it. Its a Melina blue V6 X and i promised myself id never mod it or mess about with anything again but im a lil bored of the performance and want more from it.
Ive seen alot of the american guys with wild mods no cats or silencers turbos superchargers and 3.0 conversions but im not wanting to go that far as i dont have the money to fund such a habit.
Im a Ford guy, Had a few over the years inc an XR3I which was heavily modified full janspeed exhaust inc manifold RR tuned etc etc 167bhp an RS1800 fiesta again quite modified with big cams magnex decat back omex multi mode speed system with shift lamp coilovers 165bhp an escort GTI which i put an engine i built into (sounded like a type r) it had big pistons big cams bodies 421 manifold and was stolen while it was being run in! Ive also had an RS2000 4x4 which i bought from a friend as it needed some work and sold back to him once id put it back on the road as he was sick about losing it lmao

I got the Cougar for my 25th to try to slow down a little and to grow up a bit and i always knew it needed a little doing to sort the looks. you know what i mean, the wheels the back lights the exhaust so last year after running it for 2 years i did them bits.
The rear lamps i had painted not put the crap covers on. i got a pair of st200 janspeed backboxes and modified them onto the original mid section. (basically turned them upside down and welded back on then cut old pipe off and welded in the y pipe for them) theyre 3" out rolled and look great really sound good and finish off the rear looks. Ive also got the focus sport 17" ronal 7 spokers with the cougar optional tyre size of 215/45R17 on them. had the wheels silver first and now grey.

So enough waffle why have i joined? Well i have been on before looking and if i had a problem id know to look but my cat has been great for the 3.5 years ive had her and ive had no need! I know a bit about fords and know my way around them but i need some advice on parts and i know this will have been asked time and again.

What im interested to know is info from you guys who are like i was, car mad modifying mad and have got all the stuff on yours. what should i do?

Im looking into a contour SVT inlet manifold. im also looking into a remap and may also take out cat number 3 under the car.

So the SVT parts..
Clutch
Lightened flywheel by 2lbs
19Lbs injectors
Upper maniold
Lower manifold
Throttle body
Throttle cable
Air bellows
MAF
Air box bottom
CAMS
ECU map

I have autodata and noticed the ST200 has a higher compression ratio and a 250rpm higher rev limit than the other 2.5's. I presume because of the cams.

So my questions are

1 if i change the upper & lower manifolds the injectors and the throttle body to the ST200/SVT spec do i want a mild tune for my current map or so i want the standard st200/SVT map OOORRRRR do i want a tuned ST20/SVT map?

2 Am i wasting my cash on these parts for little gain over the original spec?

3 Do i need the cams? are they the big key to the power hiding in the engine?

4 how much different is the clutch? im thinking of going for the flywheel as i reckon ill be due a clutch on my car in say 6-12 months so do i buy the ST200 one or the cougar one if i get the new fly?

5 are there other diy options like tweecer but cheaper to map with or is it same old same old with either a superchip or a bluefin or a proper RR tune?

Sorry to bombard you all but im just eager to know.

Also i saw a cougar down at the old well lane turbo centre once which was standard but had been on the RR and although the guy wouldnt tell me the figure he said it was comfortably over the 200bhp mark. You think thats do able on a std car?

Great to meet you all and hope you all have the answers.

Hello and welcome aboard mate. Unfortunately, I know little of engine mods, although I'm running a V6 with a Pipercross Air Filter and an MIJ Performance exhaust system. We have a few of the lads out there who have played with their engines and have done all sorts of various mods and engine changes i.e. ST200 head etc. There are a few of the guys who are running a little over 200bhp after the last rolling road day this year. I'm sure there will be a few people come along shortly to answer your questions.

You may want to pay your subs (£18 for the year, or £7 for 6 months) and this will open up the forum pages where there is lots of information for you to read for hours on end lol. Best of luck!

Nice one thanks for the quick reply!
Ill look into paying up after ive looked around some more and see if my face fits so to speak lol

Ok matey, were a friendly , if not quite a mad bunch around here, so you'll be made quite welcome. You wont find another forum quite this one, were like one big happy family and we are always happy to help people out.

Sounds good. guys.
To answer i dont want to take out the engine and i dont want to take off the heads. bar that its all fair game modifying wise lol Im not going through the pain of making an engine from the ground up only for it to go missing before i got to see its full potential again.

its not how mad it is around here that worries him , but all the rumours of excessive spending and grief from other half due to spending on mods, (y)

i think most will aggree best mods for std engine are exhaust , cone filter or degut the cats , the v6 is limited unless you want to modify, the works such as st200 uim or lim are not massive jobs and if you have/supply parts then this will cut down on garage costs, lol ,

Hi Stiffler - don't worry mate - if you have a face - it will fit fine

All my exploits - flowerpot mods etc are well documented on the forum. I know bugger all about cars - but I'm getting there :geek:

I HAD a really sweet V6 - was running at 184 with just a 57i and BlueFlame. I did a lot of ST200 mods - UIM, ECU, injectors, T/B etc + Racebits S/S headers = 214bhp but unfortunately ragged her around a bit too much and killed her

Now my Mafia oppos are rebuilding an ST200 block to stick my bits on + bespoke hand ported heads and a few extras and have a bet on with Fast Ford that we can do 250 - they say we can't - red rag to bull etc.

Nothing the Mafia can't do - 4 WD, turbos etc depends what you want - and, above all, the camaraderie and goodwill on here is amazing (y)

So with that said what do you have in respect to my questions? if i go for some SVT bits do i need an SVT map to run em well?
ATM ive got the pipes and a pipercross panel filter but i know alot of cars hold back on the map because of back pressure etc until mapped and then the mods are unlocked. did u map to get 184 before any svt parts or jus reset the ecu? obviously i did that

over to you mofo, you have been here before,

but i think quite a few have done st200 mods without a remap and still had good gains,

The 184 was without a remap - the 214 was running off an ST200 map as I was running an ST200 ECU but it was then RR remapped - we get good prices for group sessions and it was about £170 for that. I really don't have a clue about these things and rely on the sound advice that I get from those more knowledgeable on here - and I haven't been disappointed yet :)

You know i totally forgot the shameless plug...
Im in West Yorkshire so wont be able to help everyone BUT I do Diagnostics Phone kits Audio Auto Electrics Fault finding Wiring repairs but mostly jus diagnostics. I have a proper code reader that does AT ABS TCS DSG SRS AIRBAGS plus the usual engine stuff. Im mobile but obviously i only cover my local area.
If anyone needs any help or a code looking up my email is mobilediagnostic@live.com

The problem i forsee is mostly the injectors. if i knew id be ok with a map for my box code if do it but i jus wonder if to get near 200bhp you need the 200bhp map

so 184 on a 200 map then 214 on the revised 200 map

The 184 was on nothing more than the 57i and the exhaust - no remap or ST200(SVT) bits.

I reckon with an ST200 UIM and a few other bits and pieces you could do 200 without a remap but, for me, the ST200 injectors and ECU made the biggest difference. Unfortunately I did not have her dyno'd before the RR remap but I would bet she was well over 200.

Hi Stifler, And welcome..
I also did the ST200 LIM and UIM conversion and changed the injectors for the ST200 green ones without the remap and saw some good noticable gains, but would say to unleash the horses you would be better off having a remap after you did the conversion.
From memory you can remap the Cougar ecu and it will be fine, but better to take advice from Mofo as he has also changed the ECU for the ST one, as where i did not go that route..
The Cams would also make a difference but from memory again when i looked in to it, the amount of work and cost was outweighed the gains to be made..

Hello and welcome to the forum.
If you're not too far from Harewood House UKCougar.com will be represented by a dozen or so members this coming Sunday. A chance to meet a few people and have a gander at their Cats.
