Hi I've got a Black 2.5 v6 Cougar Vx. I didn't pay a lot for it cause the abs pump had given up not a problem it still had not and tax. So I've been driving around in it and loving it. They are a great car , then the auto box started playing up till the other day when I lost 1st , 2nd and reverse.
Now I don't know what to do next. Wether to spend loads of money on it to replace the g/box and abs pump or break it or sell it as it is. Don't really want to break it cause it's a nice car with a mint interior and all the toys.

Welcome Black Kat. :)

If you're handy with the spanners and can source a proven working auto box it could be a relatively inexpensive fix.
The TC/ABS pump can also be expensive but a cheap one usually pops up on ebay every now and then.
With the engine and gearbox out you'll have perfect access for doing the TC/ABS pump too.

Welcome chap, Your just next door to me, that's a extra cougar member in the south Devon area.. As above, if you can find a gearbox it should be fairly easy to do the swap if you know your way round the spanners a little...
There have been a couple of auto box's on eBay recently at a fairly cheap price..

Hi Black Kat,

You sure that box is dying? Look at simple stuff first, always - especially since you probably don't know her history. Have you checked the fluid levels and linkage? Difficulty selecting a particular low gear would make me check that before replacing anything.

It's an auto box, so doubtful it would be linkage's  :)

I noticed that on a re-read but didn't bother to edit, (even though that's not likely to be the problem here) since it's not impossible for a linkage problem to prevent someone selecting reverse and low gears on an auto.

Hi guys thanx for the welcome and hints.
Add_issan judging by your location I think I might know you. Are you from Torquay?

To be honest chap, Cougars are becoming more rare, and it would be a shame to break it..
I have just looked on eBay and there is a auto gearbox on there for £200 including free delivery.. I don't know if you want to go that route first, May be look to see exactly what would be causing your problem first. Check the fluid levels, I am sure the autobox has some kind of separate ECU?? May be someone can come along and confirm this? may be this could also be a cause chap??
We are fine thanks for asking.. Yes it was Shane stock i think, or it could have been Bobs wedding? i am getting old i can't remember much any more..
Don't you work in a garage chap?

Yeah I still work in a garage I am going to scan g/box ecu when I can but the car is stuck at home at the mo.
I've got 2 cars I need to sell before I can do anything with it.
I will try and get hold of you Add so we can do our Devonshire minifixmeet lol
