Hi, new to the car, new to the forum.

Hi Derek, and welcome!

So how did you come by this car? Was it purely by chance?

Had dosh in my pocket, hunting for a motor, this fell into my lap on Gumtree, had to buy (after persuading the Mrs).

Welcome Derek. I consider joining this forum was my smartest move and the best value for money in keeping my Cougar on the road. I hope you will find it every bit as useful...

Hello and welcome aboard the mad house. Have you seen the thread about Castle Combe in April this year? Would be great to see another new face and coug to the club.

Would love to be able to go to an event like that, but I don't think my car is worthy.
Needs numerous sorting.

Of course itll be happy!!! Wednesday is tool truck day at work.... its when we get to spend all our hard earned money on cool things we only think we need lol

Been there. Done that. Mr Snap-On applied for a mortgage for me.

Recent purchase of the CAT.

hi all.
a little bit of help needed.
my gear lever doesn't live at home.
in all gears, it can be moved back and forth about 3 inches.
i've check under the gaitor, and all looks good.
am i right in assuming its a linkage problem at the gearbox end?

1: how do i get to even view linkages?
2: is there a mod i can do to pull it all tight?

cheers. hope this is all ok to plant here?(n)

From my understanding on my time here, if it moves it's welcome! My needs improving to get up to standard but I have a couple of shows in mind for later in the year.

First thing to check, lift up the gaiter, have you got the early design with a metal cage, or a later plastic one?
The metal ones have some long torx head bolts holding it all together, I say 'some' because although there is space for four, often only two are fitted.

These are known to work loose, and fitting the missing two can help.

I'll try to dig out a photo

not sure. it's a 2000 model.
as yet i haven't even be able to see the gearbox end.
is it easily accessible from under the air box?

Sorry I missed a key bit of info!

Inside the car, you can pull the gaiter up and see the end of the linkage, the housing will be either black plastic or a metal one.

The metal ones often have two bolts only and they can work loose.

done that.
all the linkages up that end seem to work fine.
even if i wiggle gear lever a little, cables etc all move nicely.
i'm guessing it's at gearbox end.

Take the air box off and look under it. You should see the cables on the bulkhead side of the trans. I would guess the center section of the cable popped out in the cable end. The ends wear out pretty commonly. Over here the cable ends being replaced was about as often as y'alls sills. It's easy to check grab the end and see if it pulls off with no effort. They normally just snap on. If that center piece pops out then you have like a 20mm hole for a 6mm peg.

You can see this without taking off the airbox though; put the steering on full right lock and peer up just in front of the steering track rod.

Note that this is extremely unlikely to leave you stranded/unable to change gear. The cables' sheaths are held very firmly in the brackets, and the inners are very stiff. There isn't enough flex in the cable inners to allow them to just flop off the selector arms.

For reference, mine has been like this for about 8 months now and it hasn't bothered me enough to hunt down a new cable end to fix it.

:edit: Thirty-seven quid?! I hope you get a kiss from them first.

Ah, I do love a tidy Ebony.

I'll leave the "fried egg" comments for someone else to run with though.

I don't think I'm speaking out of turn here when I say that virtually nobody here would be surprised to find that a 15-19 year-old car might need some TLC. That comes with time and, to my mind, is a great part of the journey.

In the meantime, it really doesnt matter what she looks like. The kinds of shows we go to might have a concours section, but unless someone here has an absolutely standard Cougar in showroom condition (without underseal), you won't find any of us parked there!

The only thing I will say is - and I might be confusing my clubs here* - you would do well to be a subscriber. It goes to pay for our costs, and that includes things like insurance and the facilities that the club provides at the shows. Clearly there is no obligation though.

From my understanding on my time here, if it moves it's welcome!

Yes, absolutely!

*I might be thinking of the Rover Coupe' Owner's Club, but the sentiment still stands.

Id be extremely surprised to see anyone from here talk any type of bad even if it looked like swiss cheese, smoked so bad it becomes invisible, and the interior consisted of a steering wheel and a bucket to sit on. I think youd have a better chance of half the group jumping under the hood and turning it into a lets fix stuff day.

That's a pretty fair summary right there. Bring parts and bacon, and give us enough room.

Oh, and don't get in Tony's way. He's not Italian but for pity's sake I swear sometimes he might as well be.
