Hi,I'm new to the club and thought I'd best do my first post.originally owned a c2 a few years ago,I now have a Melina c1 24v purchased from Alex (joyrider).Doing the initial check over and clean at the moment and I have what looks like an earth feed from the drivers side bulkhead dangling.
No obvious connection, does anyone know its proper location? Apart from that the car is cleaning up beautifully and is in surprisingly good condition for its age. Will post some pictures when the marathon valet session is finished.

Martin.

Can you post a wider shot of the engine bay, please? That earth could possibly be the one which should be fixed to the upper engine mount, between the inlet manifold and the header tank.

Hello Martin and welcome to the forum.

There should be an earth strap attached to the corner of the bonnet in that vicinity; usually secured with a short hex head bolt and a star washer.

earth lead

Thanks for the replies,I've tried to take a few pics of the lead and its location.engine mount looks promising as the bonnet earth is attached.

Yep, looks like the engine mount earth from those photos. See the vertical bracket bolted to the engine mount, holding the pipework that runs above it? The 10mm (I think) bolt holding it in place should run through the centre of the spade on the end of the strap, with the spade sandwiched between the bracket and the engine mount. Be careful undoing the bolt if it's corroded and stiff, as it can easily snap off. Plenty of PlusGas or similar around the bolt before you try and use the loosen a bit/re-tighten a bit/loosen a bit method.

Just posting to say hello and welcome, since you already have your answer. Hope you stick with your Cougar and she gives you good service.

But Relliot and Quicksilver are completely right - this is the earth that goes from the OS bulkhead to the bolt that secures the PAS pipe bracket to the engine mount.

On the macro scale, it's not critical if it's disconnected. But if you have failures of other earth wires you may end up with a car that won't run right, won't start, or just plain catches fire. It's a safety net near the ECU, that's all.

That earth is important and can save you a great deal of money. It is primarily an earth point for your upper power steering pipes but its secondary usage is as a ECU backup earth point to protect against surge spikes, without this connected if you do get a spike in the ECU you will have to replace the ECU and the full engine bay wiring loom, with it connected you only need to change the ECU. Obviously a spike in the ecu is not very common but having seen this issue chew through 4 ecu's on my ex father in laws car I would rather it stay connected

The earth is reattached and some missing iacv piping renewed.I also replaced the battery which has illuminated the air bag light.planning on ignoring it for a bit and if it doesn't go away will disconnect the battery to reset the ecu and try again.

Hi Martin

Welcome to the club, hope she gives you the pleasure she gave to me

Hopefully see you soon

Thanks to all for the welcome.unfortunately I'm away for the Blackpool ford do or it would be on my list.my cougar is now on the road and after a good check over the list of jobs is surprisingly small.fingers crossed!

I'm back!!!! - not been on here for quite a while but thought i'd drop in and say hello again and trust everybody is well and Cats are behaving. As some of you know i fell out of love looking after my Cat when she was keyed a couple of years back. Well she may not look the best but i have decided to spend a little more time on her once the athletics season finished. Will be at Asda tomorrow as well so hopefully see a few of the old faces them :)

Fantastic, Geoff! Look forward to seeing you.

Still got my kitty and she's beautiful, but will be there in the Leon ST because we're gonna be hauling 3 kids. Not ours, I might add!

I desperately want to take the cat but will have to see if kids can still get in her they are so tall now otherwise it will be the Shitroen :)
