hi i have just bought my 1st cougar 1 month ago on 12/06/12 it is a 1999 t reg 2.5 manual with x pack in melina blue it has done 147903 miles with no history but has got all other handbooks it is in good condition for age it is totally standard apart from previous owener fitted kenwood bluetooth radio cd but still got factory radio tape player which was in the boot it drives well averaging 28.6 mpg. I have done 1000 miles in the month of owning it and really enjoy driving it. I bought the cougar on ebay classified ads for £400 pounds and had to go to western super mare to get it.It has got mot until november and taxed until end of july the only thing that lets it down is 2 rust bubbles quarter way down from windscreen end on driver side of bonnet on outer edge and 2 chips on roof poss caused by old ariel mast which i found in the boot also headlight lens have slightly gone yellow tarnished from the sunlight and someone has drilled a hole and glued something on dashboard in between centre airvents. I want to keep it original and standard i will eventually post some pics of my cougar also need some advice on my rear subframe as it is adviced on mot and 2 previous mots this time it is adviced it is getting weak the only thing i can see is the the trailing arms mounting brackets on rear floor are very rusty and is there anyone else in devon who own cougars let me know thanks paul

Hi and welcome aboard the mad house!! We have a few members in Devon. Sounds like you need a refurbished or good condition subframe. Becoming a common issue now. There is a wealth of knowledge on here and various uprated parts available at discounted rates. There are some uprated ARB brackets available for the rear subframe that may be worth considering. Also if the headlights are bothering you there are detailed how To's on restoring them or there some available in the classifieds too.

Enjoy the cat and have a nose about here, the search function can be your friend lol :)

Hi Paul, and welcome to the club.

Glad you're enjoying your Cougar - it's a cracking car for the money.

The headlight thing is common, just as it is on any car. It takes some patience but you can restore them with progressively-finer grit sand paper (working from maybe 500-grit up to 2500-grit) and smoker's toothpaste on a cloth or brush.

As for the subframe, that's not unheard of and you're best off getting the part off a breaker because of cost. I've not had the problem myself (yet) so I can't comment further, but I'm sure someone who has will pop along soon.

:EDIT: Beaten to it!

Hello Paul and welcome to the forum.
As above regarding the rear subframe which is the same as a MK2 Mondy one so no need to limit your search to just Cougars.

Hi Paul, welcome to ukcougar.com, your in the right place for all things cougar related, as well as some crazy banter. You will also be able to find all the fixes you need in our subscriber sections. Have a browse around the open forums and get a feel for the place. Remember! ukcougar.com is the only workshop manual for the big cat.

Top colour, lol. Its amazing how bad the rust looks when you have the car up on the ramps, hopefully just surface rust on the subframe and you can clean it up.

Or scappy price for a spare subframe for strengthing & repair £60( i have been quoted in sound condition).

Then factor in( mates rates, lol) sand blast off frame £50, repair welding and strengthing the roll bar mount areas £60, finally zinc oxide and painting the thing £50.Keep cost down and do the lot yourself.

At least you know when done wont be needing a new for a long time.

Dont forget you need new mounting bushes for the thing to,mmmmmmmmmm its the small things that start to add cost. how much!!!!!!!,lol
SI

Hello and welcome aboard Paul. You are not far from me, as I work at the Met Office in Exeter and I now live down the A38 at Ivybridge. There are quite a few of us dotted around the local area - add_issan is down in Torquay, so to is another couple of guys, one with a nice Red C2 Coug. I'll look out for you on my travels - if you see a guy in a blue Mondy Mk3 flashing you and giving you a wave, it'll be me. My coug is for fun on days off as well as events/meets. See you around sometime. Tim.
